UTHealth Houston welcomed back UTHealth Houston School of Public Health alumna Katelyn Jetelina, PhD, MPH, CEO of Your Local Epidemiologist. Dr. Jetelina is a nationally recognized health expert focused on improving public health and well-being.

Dr. Jetelina joined McGovern Medical School's Department of Pediatrics to explore how pediatric medicine, public health, injury and violence prevention, and health policy can come together to address urgent challenges facing children and adolescents.

Through cross-disciplinary collaboration, we can turn evidence into action and help build healthier, safer communities where children and families can thrive.

A new chapter awaits John A. Valenza, DDS ’81, as he has been named dean emeritus, effective Oct. 1. The honor was announced by UTHealth Houston President Melina R. Kibbe, MD, at his retirement celebration, surrounded by colleagues, friends, family, and members of the university community.

His legacy is the students he taught, the faculty and staff he mentored and supported, and the culture of family, pride, and service he helped foster.

An $8.5 million investment is helping shape the future of worker health and safety.

Researchers at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health’s Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health have received a five-year grant to strengthen education, research, and training for the next generation of occupational and environmental health professionals.

The funding will support graduate student training and research addressing workplace challenges including chemical exposures, cancer risk, climate-related heat stress, and disasters.

Kevin A. Morano, PhD, has dedicated more than 25 years to advancing research, education, mentorship, and leadership at UTHealth Houston. Now, he will help lead the university into its next chapter.

Morano has been appointed senior vice president and provost, effective Sept. 1. As the university’s chief academic officer, he will provide strategic leadership across UTHealth Houston’s academic enterprise, with a focus on student success, faculty development, educational innovation, and collaboration across the schools.

“His experience and deep understanding of our university make him exceptionally well positioned to serve as provost,” said UTHealth Houston President Melina R. Kibbe, MD.

Access to specialized healthcare shouldn't depend on where you live. Technology could help close that gap.

As a Doctor of Health Informatics student at McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth Houston, Asha Poulose Johnson is studying how tools such as smartphone-based screenings, AI, and medical devices can help bring earlier diagnosis and better care to communities where specialists are scarce.

With support from the James Turley Endowed Scholarship for Global Health, she's building on her experience to explore solutions designed to reach more people.
