⏳ YOUR BODY MAY CHANGE BEFORE THE MIRROR DOES

Ever wonder why you can feel your workouts working before you can see the results?

🧠 Early strength gains often come from better nervous-system activation, coordination, and exercise technique—not immediately from larger muscles.

💪 Measurable muscle growth generally requires repeated training over several weeks, while visible changes may take longer depending on age, training history, nutrition, recovery, and genetics.

🔥 Fat loss follows a different pathway. Exercise supports energy expenditure and helps preserve lean mass, but meaningful fat loss usually requires a sustained calorie deficit.

Quick tips:

✅ Track strength, repetitions, energy, and waist measurements—not only scale weight
✅ Train consistently with progressive resistance
✅ Eat adequate protein and prioritize sleep
✅ Compare progress over 4–12 weeks, not day to day
✅ Remember: improved health and performance still count—even before they “show”

Consistency produces the signal. Recovery allows the adaptation. Patience reveals the result. 📈

💪 YOUR CORE IS MORE THAN ABS

Your core isn’t just about looking lean—it’s the body’s power transfer center. 🏃‍♂️🏋️‍♀️

Research shows that a strong, well-trained core improves stability, balance, force transfer, movement efficiency, and athletic performance. It also helps maintain proper technique as fatigue sets in. The biggest gains come from training your core to resist movement, not just create it. 📚

✅ Quick Tips:
• Train your core 2–3 times/week
• Include planks, side planks, bird dogs, dead bugs, Pallof presses, carries, and hanging leg raises
• Focus on quality and control, not endless repetitions
• Remember: heavy squats, deadlifts, overhead presses, and carries also build an incredibly strong functional core 💥

Your strongest lifts—and your best athletic performance—depend on how well your entire body works together. A resilient core helps connect it all.

References: Kibler WB et al., Sports Medicine (2006); Reed CA et al., Sports Medicine (2012 Systematic Review); recent systematic reviews continue to support core training as part of comprehensive athletic development.

❤️⚡ COULD YOU USE THIS AED TO SAVE A LIFE?

I noticed this AED at the gym—a reminder that sudden cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, including during exercise.

An AED is designed for ordinary bystanders. It analyzes the heart rhythm, provides voice prompts, and delivers a shock only when an appropriate shockable rhythm is detected.

🚨 If a teen or adult suddenly collapses:

✅ Confirm unresponsiveness and absent or abnormal breathing—gasping is not normal breathing.
✅ Call 911 and send someone for the AED.
✅ Begin hands-only CPR: push hard and fast in the center of the chest at 100–120 compressions per minute.
✅ Turn on the AED, expose and dry the chest, attach the pads as pictured, and follow every prompt.
✅ Resume CPR immediately after a shock—or when “no shock advised” is announced.

Trained rescuers may provide 30 compressions to two breaths. Breaths are especially important for children, drowning, overdose, and respiratory emergencies.

📌 Locate the AED wherever you regularly train—and consider becoming CPR/AED certified. Preparation turns hesitation into action.

🥤 PROTEIN BARS: SMART TOOL, NOT A STAPLE

Protein bars can be a convenient way to add protein—but convenience and necessity aren’t the same thing.

💪 The good: Quality protein supports muscle maintenance, recovery and healthy aging. Supplements can help when whole-food protein isn’t practical.

⚠️ The caution: A protein bar is still a processed convenience food. Some bars contain large amounts of fiber and sugar alcohols, which can cause bloating, gas or other GI symptoms in susceptible people.

🥚 The better foundation: Build most protein intake around nutrient-rich foods—fish, eggs, dairy, lean meats, legumes and nuts.

🔎 Quick Tips
✅ Check protein, added sugar and ingredients
✅ Choose products you tolerate well
✅ Use bars strategically—travel, training or busy days
✅ Don’t fear an occasional bar
✅ Think overall dietary pattern, not one individual food

🏆 Bottom line: There is no good evidence that appropriately used protein bars or protein supplements cause cancer. The stronger evidence supports adequate protein—especially as we age—while keeping minimally processed foods at the center of the diet.

🏃‍♂️ CLEARED TO BEGIN RUNNING AGAIN! 🚀 🇩🇪

Yesterday at Memorial Hermann Rockets Sports Medicine, my rehabilitation reached an encouraging milestone.

My sports physical therapist evaluated:

✅ Walking and running mechanics
✅ Single- and double-leg balance
✅ Calf and soleus strength
✅ Functional movement and squat patterns
✅ Pain response under progressively greater load

I then completed 1.5 pain-free miles on an AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill, progressing from 60% through 70%, 80% and 90%—and ultimately reaching 100% of my body weight without pain.

🚀 WHAT IS THE ALTERG?

Using NASA-inspired Differential Air Pressure technology, the AlterG encloses the lower body inside an air-pressure chamber. It can precisely adjust weight-bearing from 20% to 100% in 1% increments.

This allows clinicians to gradually restore impact, assess gait and monitor symptoms before returning an athlete to regular ground running.

🎯 THE BOTTOM LINE

I have been cleared to begin a carefully graded return-to-running program. That is a major step forward—but clearance is the beginning of the progression, not the end of rehabilitation.

Berlin remains the goal. Patience, objective testing and disciplined load management remain the plan. 💪🏅

🏃‍♂️ Pain isn’t always where the problem starts.

Many runners blame sore knees, tight hips, or an aching back on “getting older” or simply running.

The science tells a different story. 🔬

Your body works as one connected kinetic chain. A weakness, mobility restriction, poor movement pattern, or sudden increase in training load in one area can change how forces are absorbed throughout your body—sometimes leading to pain somewhere completely different.

That doesn’t mean one tight muscle causes every injury. Most running injuries develop from a combination of training errors, fatigue, strength deficits, recovery, and biomechanics.

✅ Quick Tips
• 💪 Strength train 2×/week (especially hips, glutes, calves & core)
• 🏃 Increase mileage gradually
• 🤸 Keep key joints mobile—not excessively flexible
• 🎥 Consider a gait analysis if pain persists
• 😴 Prioritize sleep and recovery as much as workouts

Small improvements in movement quality today can mean fewer injuries and more enjoyable miles tomorrow.

WELLNESS IS MORE THAN A WORKOUT ✨

This afternoon, I stepped away from the gym and training schedule to experience James Hood’s BEAUTIFICA in Houston’s Museum District—and it was absolutely fantastic.

Inside the 360° dome, light, music, color, and movement came together to create an immersive journey that was sometimes peaceful, sometimes exhilarating, and completely captivating. 🌌🎶

Experiences like this are a wonderful reminder that caring for ourselves extends beyond exercise and nutrition. Making room for wonder, creativity, joy, and meaningful experiences can help us slow down, become fully present, and reconnect with life outside our daily routines.

Everyone may see and feel something different during BEAUTIFICA—and perhaps that is part of what makes it so memorable.

If you’re in Houston and looking for something genuinely unique, this is an experience I would enthusiastically recommend. Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is simply step into something beautiful. 💫

🚶 DAILY MOVEMENT COUNTS—BUT IS IT ENOUGH?

Getting thousands of steps at work is valuable. It supports cardiovascular and metabolic health and helps reduce prolonged sitting. But walking and standing do not necessarily provide the progressive overload required to maximize muscle strength, mass, and function. 💪

With aging and inactivity, muscle fibers can shrink while fat infiltration within and around muscle may increase—but fat does not simply “replace” muscle overnight.

✅ Accumulate movement throughout the day
✅ Break up sitting every 30–60 minutes
✅ Perform progressive resistance training at least twice weekly
✅ Train all major muscle groups
✅ Gradually increase resistance, repetitions, or sets

The best approach isn’t steps OR strength training—it’s both. Movement supports health; resistance training helps preserve the muscle needed to remain strong, capable, and independent. 🏋️‍♂️

TRAINING THROUGH RECOVERY 🏃‍♂️➡️🚴‍♂️

Today’s Berlin Marathon training looked different: one hour of Zone 2 on the elliptical followed by one hour on the stationary bike.

With a significant soleus injury, the priority is allowing the damaged tissue to heal—not forcing running before it is ready. But removing impact doesn’t mean abandoning training.

Strategic cross-training can help preserve aerobic fitness, maintain routine, and support the psychological side of recovery while injured tissue is protected.

As both an athlete and a coach, this is the lesson I’m living right now: the plan may change, but the goal—and the commitment—can remain.

Recovery first. Berlin remains the motivation. 🇩🇪

🧭 DO YOU TRAIN IN ALL 3 PLANES OF MOTION?

The three anatomical planes help us describe movement:

➡️ Sagittal: forward/backward—squats, running and curls
↔️ Frontal: side-to-side—lateral raises, side steps and hip abduction
🔄 Transverse: rotation—cable chops, throwing and changing direction

Most daily and athletic movements are actually multiplanar. Running is predominantly sagittal, but the hips and trunk must also control frontal-plane motion and transverse-plane rotation.

✅ Quick training tips:

• Match most training to your activity’s demands
• Add controlled lateral and rotational work
• Progress load, speed and complexity gradually
• Prioritize excellent control—not simply more variety

Research supports multicomponent neuromuscular programs incorporating strength, balance, agility and movement control for improving motor function and reducing some sports injuries—but merely checking off all three planes is not an injury-prevention guarantee.
