Rosa Louise McCauley, better known as Rosa Parks, was born in Tuskegee, Alabama. The famed civil rights activist is remembered most for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger in December 1955. Her refusal became an important symbol for the Civil Rights Movement.

In 1963, around 250,000 people—both Black and white—took part in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Martin Luther King Jr. made an appearance and preached about nonviolent resistance. “I have a dream,” King said in his famous speech.

In 1981, broadcast journalist Bryant Gumbel became the first Black person to host a network morning show when he joined NBC’s Today show.

Hiram Rhodes Revels was sworn in as the first Black U.S. senator in 1870

Phillis Wheatley was the first African American to publish a book of poetry, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, in 1773. Born in the Gambia and sold to the Wheatley family in Boston when she was 7 years old, Wheatley was emancipated shortly after her book was released.

Miriam Elizabeth Benjamin (September 16, 1861 – 1947) was an American schoolteacher and inventor. In 1888, she obtained a patent for the Gong and Signal Chair for Hotels, becoming the second African-American woman to receive a patent.
