"My hope is that my poetry can be somewhat difficult."

To mark the end of National Poetry Month, we're sharing an abridged clip from HAAA's oral history interview with poet Weijia Pan. In it, he speaks on writing poetry that resonates across cultural perspectives and his hope for a wider historical and global awareness in American verse.

Weijia Pan is the author of MOTHERLANDS, which follows the speaker-poet through a childhood in post-Maoist China and eventual move to the United States. A University of Houston MFA graduate, Pan was recently named this year's recipient of the Benjamin H. Danks Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

🪞 “Art is a mirror.”

In this abridged clip from her 2021 oral history interview with the HAAA, artist Hong Hong reflects on the intimacy of being seen through an artist’s work, across distance and language, without ever having met.

Hong’s largely nomadic practice coalesces ancestral Chinese papermaking, feminist performance, and textures of memory and migration. Her monumental paperworks are made from mulberry bark, local water, sunlight, and time as conduits for exile, divinity, and Chinese-American subjectivity.
