Summer academic regression—commonly known as the "summer slide"—is the decline in academic skills and knowledge that can occur when students are not engaged in educational activities during summer break. On average, students lose about one month of learning, with math and spelling skills being the most vulnerable. Younger students, those in elementary school, face the highest risk. While reading comprehension levels generally stay flat or plateau, math computation and procedural facts are highly susceptible to loss. Students who experience continuous learning loss each summer are more likely to fall significantly behind by the time they reach middle or high school.
At The Little Montessori School Kingwood, we fight the "summer slide" by engaging students in different subject matter, encouraging hands on materials, and presenting experiential opportunities. As you can see, students are continuing to learn and grow!

Juneteenth is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. This holiday serves as a celebration of resilience, Black culture, and community, while also acting as an annual reckoning with the legacy of slavery and the ongoing pursuit of equality in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston and announced that enslaved African Americans were free. This came a full two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Today, we did the math to calculate the number of days that slave owners kept slaves AFTER THE SLAVES WERE DECLARED FREE. Slaves were held captive for 912 days AFTER they had been declared free. Today honors the day that slaves in Texas were finally granted their freedom!

We have been talking a lot about friendships and how to show our friends that we care. Relationships are important. Peer relationships quickly become the most influential part of social development in the elementary years. Friendships help children build confidence, develop a sense of belonging, and shape how they see themselves at school. Peer relationships also influence academic growth. Today, several friends shared their feelings with a friend during our afternoon meeting.

Our Elementary and Middle School Communities have been working on The Compliment Project this month. In Barbara Robinson’s classic novel The Best School Year Ever, the "compliment project" is a year-long assignment where students must find something nice to say about every single classmate. It challenges students to look past differences and find redeeming qualities in everyone, ultimately serving as a great empathy and team-building activity. WHAT A GREAT WAY TO FINISH THE YEAR!
