According to Forbes and the National Science Foundation, only 7% of black people hold doctoral degrees in the United States (U.S.) and only 4% of doctoral degrees are held by black women. In 2020, 55,283 doctorates were granted and ONLY 3,095 of those terminal degrees were earned by black people. Heavy on the ONLY! Considering the fact that the Worldometer and the United States Census Bureau (2020) indicates that there are well over 300 million people living in the United States, I would say that those numbers are quite unremarkable.
Although I completed my final defense and had my degree conferred in October 2021, there was no way that I was going to let the opportunity to walk across the stage at commencement pass me by. My ancestors paved the way for this greatness. I loaded up my family of four and took my kids on their very first flight because mommy is their role model. They will be well educated and well traveled. We headed to Connecticut, attended my commencement, and enjoyed the momentous occasion.

I will say this once again. I am a small town girl from a small town world. This is only our beginning. Where you are from does not define where you will go or who you will be. You can accomplish anything in this life that you set your mind to do. Going to college is not the only route that you can take in life to be successful, but it is an option. Whatever you decide to do, put your heart into it and be persistent. My favorite saying is "faith without works is dead" because people like to think that a goal is going to achieve itself without a strategic plan and labor. For my nursing students this means thinking you deserve an A in a class, when you never open a book, never implement a study plan, and always procrastinate. Think about it.
