Imagine you’re sitting at your desk, staring at the clock. The meeting is in 10 minutes, but still, you don’t feel ready. You’ve rehearsed the conversation in your head 100 times, but your stomach is still in knots.
Today, you need to talk to a team member about their performance. It’s not just a regular chat but a tough conversation you’ve dreaded for weeks. You know it needs to happen, but you’re worried about how it will go.
Will they get defensive? Will the discussion strain your relationship?
As a leader, having these difficult conversations is part of the job, but it doesn’t make them any easier. With the right approach, you can turn these challenging moments into opportunities for growth and understanding.

🌟 Small, Smart Steps Serve Well.
In Redefine Your Servant Leadership, Jon talks about taking small, smart steps as a leader.
We've all faced high stakes and challenges head-on—and failed many times.
This might make you think... Can I really do this? Is this who I want to be?
While sometimes diving into the deep end is necessary, starting small with manageable challenges is often better. Repeated small, smart actions lead to progress, and progress brings dramatic change over time.
What small step can you take today?
→ Schedule the meeting you've been avoiding
→ Set a specific time to leave work
→ Tell the Kind Truth to a trusted colleague
→ Say “That doesn’t work for me”

The "shoulds" weigh heavy on servant leaders.
People often say servant leaders should always be selfless, always putting others first. They should be completely sympathetic, understanding every team member's needs and emotions. They should be available 24/7, never missing a chance to support their team. They should be perfect role models, setting the bar high in every aspect.
But this kind of "should-ing" can guilt them into submission, reinforce perfectionism, increase the fear of negative responses, and add social pressure. ❗️

An important skill of leadership: Equipping new hires with the tools, resources, and support they need to thrive in their roles.
Create "onboarding buddies" – your culture champions – to guide and assist new team members as they settle in.
📄 Don’t forget the essentials: I-9s, W-2s, W-4s, background checks, payroll/direct deposit, and system access. These steps are crucial for a smooth onboarding process. ✅
And most importantly, integrate them into your workplace culture – not just as spectators, but as active contributors!
Whether it's a half-day with the founder, a weekly/monthly lunch with the CEO, or culture champions lunching with new hires, make sure they feel welcomed and part of the mission, vision, values, and behaviors. 💼

💬 My earliest lesson in leadership was around age 12 from a heart-to-heart with my Dad in the car🚗
I can't recall the activity, but we were on the way home from a sporting activity. I asked him about one of the other dads who took up a lot of the air in the room. You might say he was loud, pushy even.
🗣️ My Dad's response? “You don’t need to be the loudest one in the room to be the leader.”
Even at 12, this made sense to me. Being loud doesn't make a leader.
My dad's wisdom, mixed with intuition, set the stage for my future leadership.
I still think about this conversation...
