Parent Survival Guide During COVID-19:
I heard a parent say the other day that the math seemed to be so different and new. Many of you can relate especially if you have been out of school for years. During COVID-19, parents are having to work with their children doing schoolwork while they work from home. Additionally, if you are a grandparent, you are equally frustrated and finding out that math is more complicated than ever before. The online platform can leave you quite baffled especially if you are not tech savvy. This can add a lot of stress to the load you may already be carrying during this pandemic.
Math is not as straight forward as it used to be. Gone are the days of just memorizing multiplication tables, formulas and addition facts. The math now requires more critical thinking and teachers provide multiple ways of achieving an answer to a problem.
Here are a few resources that may be beneficial in helping you get quick answers to assist your child:
https://www.mathcelebrity.com/online-math-tutor.php - provides math help instantly. All you have to do is enter the problem and it explains the problem step-by-step.
If you are truly desperate, the last resort would be the PhotoMath app. This is a wonderful app that reads and solves mathematical problems instantly by using the camera of your mobile device. This app takes the frustration out of problem solving. All you have to do is scan the problem, solve and learn. However, I would make sure that you are the only one that has the app to ensure that your child is not just putting down the answers without fully understanding how to solve the problem.
With that being said, it is always a good idea to reach out to that teacher for assistance if your child is struggling. I would be careful about teaching a technique that may differ from those used in the classroom. It would be beneficial if the teacher could meet with you and your child to walk you through the problem at hand.
Although you may be faced with helping your child through most tasks, encourage your child to be independent in the completion of their assignments.
