Press Release: FCC/FCS Head of School Search Process

Following a search process that generated over seventy candidates, offered evaluation of our school along both FCC and FCS evaluation, and affirmed the mission of our church and school, we are developing a three-part strategy to move our school forward in excellence.

1. Effective May 23, the search process selected Afton Ryals as Head of School (HOS).
Afton grew up in Kingwood with an older brother and older sister, spent a few years in Indiana before returning to greater Houston. She has extensive experience in all phases, working in young child profession as assistant teacher, lead teacher, curriculum creator, assistant director, and for the past few years as school director. She has worked all grade levels from PreK through eighth grade. Afton has full credentials from the state at the director level. Afton has her degree from Sam Houston State University.

In her words: I love working with children and have been doing so for the last 11 years! I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. When I’m not working, you can find me at home with my two dogs (a boxer named Bowser and a lab mix named Duke), and my significant other James. I love to bake and read and am constantly coming up with new recipes to try. I am so incredibly excited to have joined FCS as their new Head of School! I look forward to getting to know every one of our families and helping the children and the school continue to grow.

2. FCC/FCS secures Katherine Arbiter as Montessori consultant.
Katherine has been in the Houston Montessori since 1982. She is a Montessori Master Teacher. She brings energy, enthusiasm, and excellence to every endeavor.

Katherine has honed the classroom leadership skills needed to successfully guide students’ learning in an exciting Montessori child-centered community. Katherine spearheaded the project to create and sustain two Public Montessori Schools serving a diverse group of 1450 children ages three to twelve. Katherine will consult with the board and be an ear to Head of School in the movement forward in the development of our school in Montessori relationship.

3. Develop a deeper learning relationship with our parent/family groups.

FCS is a diverse student/family body, currently representing 160 students. Currently our traditional/Montessori distribution is nearly 50/50. Many of our new student tours are excited and attracted about the hybrid choice model. Our goal is to fully develop each model and see where that leads.

To do that, we realize we need to develop a relational and educational connection to parents. Covid has made that hard, but we are newly committed to doing that in creative ways. Rev. Caroline Hamilton-Arnold, a member of the FCC/FCS board and a parent of a current Montessori enrolled child, will be leading the development of a parent relationship group this fall.

We are excited to share the news of these leaders and look forward to what our shared work will accomplish.
