Did you know that talking with your child from the time they’re born builds the language skills they need for later reading success? Serve-and-return conversations, where you and your child take turns talking, look different at all ages:

- Infants watch your face, smile, coo, and babble when it’s their turn to talk.
- Toddlers repeat words or say a few words together for a short sentence.
- Preschoolers form longer sentences.

What can you do to boost your child’s language skills?
- Narrate what you’re doing to help your child hear language.
- Use new words and tell your child what the word means to build their vocabulary.
- Ask your child questions. If they are too young to answer, respond for them.
- Expand on your child’s language. For example, if they say, “Daddy, up!” you can say, “You want daddy to pick you up!”

Heads up: Raising your vehicle's head restraint to the correct height helps protect the head and neck of older children, teens and adults when they're riding in a backless booster or buckled in a vehicle seat. Head restraints should provide support to at least the top of the rider's ears. Take a second next time you're in the car to check yours and move it up if needed.
