Ms. Lenore’s class explored a fascinating chemical reaction called a clock reaction. It gets its name because we can actually measure the time it takes for the solution to suddenly change color. What makes this experiment so interesting is that two chemical reactions are happening at the same time and competing with each other. One reaction keeps the solution clear, while the other works to turn it blue. You can think of it like a game of tug-of-war. At first the clear team is winning and prevents the color change. As the reaction continues, the chemicals keeping the solution clear are gradually used up. Once they run out, the blue team takes over and the solution quickly changes color. The class observed how changing amounts of certain chemicals can affect how long the countdown lasts before the color change occurs. This helped them learn about reaction rates and how scientists can predict and measure chemical changes.

12 classrooms competed in our May Walk and Roll Challenge. Thanks to AtlantiCare's Healthy Schools, Healthy Children initiative, the winners received a $25 Amazon gift card to purchase fun or needed items for their classrooms. The winning classrooms were:
From Ocean Academy, Ms. Mack's class with 710 minutes walked and Ms. Ruderick's class with 1,165 minutes walked.
From Cape May County High School, Ms. Dani's class with 1,065 minutes walked and Ms. Lenore's class with 1,156 minutes walked.
