Right in the middle of a busy college campus in Baton Rouge sit two quiet grassy hills that are older than the pyramids of Egypt. 🌿 Most folks walking past them never realize they are standing beside some of the oldest known man-made structures anywhere in the Americas.
Built up basket by basket by Indigenous people thousands of years ago, the LSU Campus Mounds have watched over this stretch of the Mississippi longer than anyone can truly imagine. Generations of students have picnicked and rolled down them, mostly unaware that they were resting on ground shaped by hands from a world we can barely picture. 🍃
There is something humbling about a place that stays gentle and green while the centuries roll past. These old mounds remind us that Louisiana's story started long before the first map was ever drawn, and that history is often hiding in the most ordinary looking places. Everybody has walked past a piece of the past without knowing it. ✨
