The Water Institute, a partner organization of the United Houma Nation, and WWNO New Orleans Public Radio are seeking stories from tribal citizens about the Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927 to broadcast in a special radio/podcast series. The series will commemorate the Flood’s centennial anniversary and the devastating impact it had on Louisiana.

According to the National Weather Service, the 1927 Flood covered 23,000 square miles, displaced more than 700,000 people, took at least 246 lives, and caused $7.4 billion in property damage.

If you have a Flood-related story you would like to share, please email your name, phone number and a brief description to Sherry Parfait at [email protected]. The last day to submit your story is Friday, October 2, 2026.

UHN RISING Key Terminology and Vocabulary

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing key terminology and vocabulary that we use in the UHN RISING project so we can all speak the same language in social media posts, community meetings, and community gatherings.

This week we’re starting with two foundational terms: Blue Sky Days and Grey Sky Days. These help us tailor programming and services based on what’s happening around us

Blue Sky Days:
• Refer to normal, non-emergency periods when there is no disaster or crisis occurring
• During Blue Sky Days, resilience hubs and communication systems are used for regular community activities, such as:
- Hosting community events, educational programs, and cultural gatherings.
- Providing ongoing services and resources to residents
- Maintaining communication channels (website, radio, newsletters) for information sharing and engagement

Grey Sky Days:
• Refer to periods of emergency, disaster, or crisis (such as hurricanes, floods, or other hazards)
• During Grey Sky Days, the resilience hubs and communication systems shift to support emergency response, including:
- Serving as coordination centers
- Distributing emergency supplies and information
- Broadcasting emergency alerts and instructions through established communication channels

Understanding the difference helps us all stay prepared and connected, whether the skies are clear or stormy!

The 2026 Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Contest consists of four (4) separate Quarterly Contests - one for each calendar quarter of 2026. Regions is awarding four (4) $8,000 scholarships through each Quarterly Contest. No purchase or banking relationship is required.

To enter, high school seniors and college undergraduate students can submit either a written essay or video about someone in their community who has inspired them.

Eligibility: Minimum GPA is only 2.0; open to age 16+. The contest is limited to AL, AR, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MS, MO, NC, SC, TN and TX.

Mandatory Pre-Bid Conference: The conference for the reconstruction of the United Houma Nation Administration Building will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

Meeting Location: The Mandatory Pre-Bid Conference will begin at the Terrebonne Parish Main Library, 151 Library Drive, Houma, LA 70360, and will be followed by a tour of the construction site at 400 Monarch Drive, Houma, LA 70364.

**Attendance is required for all prime bidders**
