Update from the HHS Spanish Club:

The second half of the trip to the Dominican Republic was full of activity and adventure. We saw the carnaval costumes from 2 different cities and learned about more about the festival. Some students got to try using the whip from one region and we all got to put on costumes and use traditional instruments for a mini parade.

Some of our students participated in a pick up basketball game at a community gym. We also took a jiu- jitsu lesson and learned how it has become part of the culture in the town of Cabarete.

We explored a fortress and learned a little bit about the Spanish occupation of the Dominican Republic.

We ended the trip with a surfing lesson followed by trying fresh coconuts, zip lining, and snorkeling along the reef of a tiny island off the coast of the Dominican Republic that included a ride through the mangrove trees. We even celebrated a birthday!

We are all happy to be heading home to share all of our experiences from our trip!

Check out the update from the HHS Spanish Club:

We are having a blast in the Dominican Republic so far! After a long day of traveling we made it to Santo Domingo and to our hotel. After a later dinner the kids got the chance to explore the area a bit.

The next day we took a walking tour of Santo Domingo, then headed to the Tres Ojos caves, which have natural underground springs. Then we headed to our next hotel for dinner and some fun at the pool and in the nearby river. We finished the night with some karaoke.

The third day started with a tour of a special environmental school to learn about forestry, agriculture, and the local education system. After that we walked some hanging bridges to arrive to a scenic waterfall. After that we went white water rafting and had an early dinner. We followed up dinner with done delicious artisanal ice cream and a trip to the local grocery store for snacks. The night ended with more poolside fun and karaoke.

Today we attended a pottery lesson where we learned how to make the Dominican faceless doll (a well known local craft), helped make bricks which will be donated to make indoor cooking stoves that are more sustainable and healthier for locals, and took turn attending to make something on the pottery wheel. After that we had lunch, visited a museum to learn more about Dominican culture, visited a monument with a lookout point of the city and headed to our hotel. We finished the evening with a walking tour of the city and a late dinner.
