Huskies believe that world-class research and community service go hand in hand! 💛 🐾🖤

Through outreach programs like BASIC (Building Adult Skills In Computing) at the Portage Lake District Library, Michigan Tech students and faculty work directly with area residents to make everyday technology easier, safer, and more accessible.

Computer Science PhD student Tagore Kosireddy spends time each week helping community members master their devices, from photo editing to FaceTiming family. That same spirit of helpfulness directly inspires his doctoral research on making AI systems safer and easier for non-experts to understand.

Learn more about Tagore’s work, his passion for community outreach, and how Huskies are building technology for good: https://blogs.mtu.edu/computing/2026/08/07/this-huskys-basic-mission-is-building-ai-technology-for-good/

Congratulations to ICC members Robert Schneider (Mathematical Sciences) and Yi Hu (Electrical and Computer Engineering) on receiving Seed Grant Awards.

Schneider’s project, Distributed LLM for MTU Students and the Rogers-Ramanujan-Slater Database, explores energy-efficient distributed AI infrastructure and an AI assistant for mathematical research.

Hu’s project, A Proof-of-Concept Framework for Power System Synthetic Data Generation via AI Agentic Programming, explores trustworthy, reproducible approaches to generating synthetic power system data.

We’re excited to see how these projects advance research at Michigan Tech and beyond!

One month in for our new Department of Data Science!

Officially launched on July 1, the department is up, running, and ready to welcome our Huskies for the new academic year. Led by Department Chair Laura Brown, this new home for data science further enhances our College of Computing community and positions our students at the forefront of one of the nation's fastest-growing fields.

As the dog days of summer quickly approach, we want to introduce the College of Computing's own robot dog, Balto!

Named for the legendary husky who ran the final stretch of a 500-mile sled dog relay to deliver the diphtheria antitoxin to Nome, Alaska in 1925, Balto is used for research in first response situations and robotic operation in complex environments.

His classroom visits allow students to learn more about human-robot collaboration, and he can't wait to greet the new Computing Huskies coming to campus this fall!

The ICC is proud to announce that the Center for Biocomputing and Digital Health (BDH) is entering an exciting new chapter this summer. As we celebrate Dr. Jingfeng Jiang’s outstanding leadership and vision in co-founding the Center, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Weihua Zhou as the Center’s new director.

Join us in thanking Dr. Jiang for his contributions and welcoming Dr. Zhou as he leading BDH into the future.

Meet an engineer, computer scientist, leader, musician (and cat lover!) helping to shape research and create community at Michigan Tech.

Congratulations to Dr. Tim Havens, our 2026 Michigan Tech Research Award winner! As a Tech alumnus himself, Tim returned to campus in 2012 and has spent the last decade bringing researchers together across departmental lines to tackle society's biggest challenges—from AI to Great Lakes stewardship.

"One of the most rewarding aspects of academia is helping others succeed," Tim says.

Join us in thanking Dr. Havens for his incredible dedication to our students and community! Read the full Michigan Tech News Q&A: https://www.mtu.edu/news/2026/07/michigan-tech-research-award-winner-turns-data-into-better-decisions-and-bigger-discoveries.html
