The Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC) provides faculty and students the opportunity to work across organizational boundaries to create an environment that is a reflection of contemporary technological innovation. This collaboration allows for a convergence in communication, control, and computing that mirrors today’s industry and society.

Congratulations to the ICC’s Dr. Yu Cai, Associate Dean of the College of Computing, Professor of Applied Computing, on receiving a $2.45 million National Science Foundation (NSF) award!

The project will support the CyberAI SFS program at Vanderbilt University, preparing doctoral students for careers at the intersection of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Through research in secure and trustworthy AI, experiential learning, and partnerships with federal agencies and national laboratories, the program will help strengthen the nation’s AI-security workforce.

Congrats to Dr. Cai on this huge contribution to AI, cybersecurity, and computing education!

Muzumdar will discuss the growth of Industry 4.0, Automation Alley’s role in the evolving manufacturing landscape, and how AI is unlocking new possibilities in 3D printing.

TRON (1982) Free Film Showing for ICC Computational Showcase (9/29, 6:30 PM, Fisher 135)
Join us on Tuesday, September 29, for a free public screening of the epic 1982 Disney sci-fi film, Tron — part of the Computing [MTU] Showcase happening on campus in the Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC) and College of Computing, an annual showcase. See the original film trailer from the link in our bio!

Far ahead of its time, the classic film (rated PG) featured innovative computer graphics and special effects, a soundtrack by legendary electronic composer Wendy Carlos, and a theme that is chillingly contemporary: an AI superhero is programmed to infiltrate an evil corporate computer stealing work from programmers and other corporations. Tron to the rescue!

Doors will open at 6:30 PM with a curated “Making of Tron” video playlist about the CGI, music and tech behind the film. Film screening at 7:00 PM. Refreshments will be served during a mid-film intermission. Free to students, staff and the public. Appropriate for children.

Tron is sponsored by the ICC Art in Silico Committee who hold the annual spring Art in Silico computational arts show on campus, and by the MTU Film Board.

Congratulations to ICC’s Dr Briana Bettin on receiving a $749,672 NSF award to develop and study a curriculum focused on data visualization and data-based narrative design.

Dr. Bri is an Associate Professor of Computer Science as well as Psychology and Human Factors at Michigan tech. Her project will help students from a variety of academic backgrounds learn to create effective, accessible data visualizations while integrating programming, communication, visual design, and human centered approaches.

How can autonomous coding agents become more reliable?

As AI continues to change how software is developed, researchers are exploring how coding agents can move beyond simply generating code to independently testing, evaluating, and improving their solutions.

Research by ICC member Dr. Jie Wu examines how to create more dependable autonomous coding agents. The work also considers where human oversight remains important as these systems become more capable.

Research by ICC member Dr. Bo Xiao has been featured by the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) Pilot, an NSF supported initiative advancing access to AI research resources.

The project, Transforming Safety, explores how AI can be applied to improve safety in construction.
