Join the ICC on August 26 in the MUB Superior Room for an afternoon focused on supporting research at Michigan Tech!

Faculty and graduate students are invited to learn more about budgeting practices for research proposals and hear the latest updates on the Center for AI’s proposal support tools. The event will also follow up on last year’s AI Report Out and highlight resources available to researchers.

The event will be hosted by Dr. Vinh Nguyen and the ICC Center for AI.

“In real construction environments, usefulness should also be measured by whether the system reduces errors, improves efficiency, supports safety awareness, and fits naturally into existing work processes.” - Dr. Bo Xiao, Assistant Professor, Construction Management.

Dr. Xiao joined Michigan Tech in the Fall of 2023, conducting research in construction informatics, AI applications in construction, and construction robotics, and has recieved grants from the NSF POSE and CI-PAOS programs during this time. Congratulations to ICC members Robert Schneider (Mathematical Sciences) and Yi Hu (Electrical and Computer Engineering) on receiving Seed Grant Awards.

Schneider’s project, Distributed LLM for MTU Students and the Rogers-Ramanujan-Slater Database, explores energy-efficient distributed AI infrastructure and an AI assistant for mathematical research.

Hu’s project, A Proof-of-Concept Framework for Power System Synthetic Data Generation via AI Agentic Programming, explores trustworthy, reproducible approaches to generating synthetic power system data.

We’re excited to see how these projects advance research at Michigan Tech and beyond!

The ICC recently hosted a High School Cybersecurity Hackathon, bringing together 28 students across eight teams!

Students learned about LLM security in the morning, then put their skills to the test during an afternoon hackathon featuring robotic vehicle platforms from ICC member Dr. Bo Chen’s Lab.

Congratulations to our winners:

🥇 Jacey Zhou, Rounak Chatterjee, Samuel Cai, and Lucas Lee
🥈 Kalle Larsen, Eli Larsen, and Jonathan Schuett
🥉 Farid Rawashdeh, Xavier Hutchinson, Brandon Kiley, and Jacob Sundstrom

Thank you to everyone who helped make the event such an educational, fun experience!

Have you ever thought about how generative AI affects construction?

Dr. Bo Xiao, Assistant Professor in Construction Management at Tech, has been researching just that. Dr Xiao joined Michigan Tech in the Fall of 2023, and has analyzed construction informatics, AI applications in construction, and construction robotics in his time. He has also received grants from the NSF POSE and CI-PAOS programs while at MTU.
