Founded in 1975 as the Language Skills Lab, the Michigan Tech Writing Center has operated under various guises, but one thing has always remained consistent—for more than 45 years, we’ve been welcoming generations of Michigan Tech students from every program on campus into more emergent, reflective, socially conscious, and rhetorically grounded writing practice.

Doors open Monday, August 30.

Regular semester hours: Mondays-Thursdays 10am-7pm; Fridays 10am-4pm.

Make an appointment at mtu.mywconline.com or visit us in room 107 of the Walker Arts & Humanities Center on the campus of Michigan Tech.

Q: Why is good writing important?
A: “Writing is a route for communication. It's necessary to continue spreading ideas and knowledge to others. It also holds power in declaration of laws and acts of war. Writing is also a delicate craft that, when done correctly, moves someone as much as a painting or music. Writing is the essence of humanity."

Current Position: Civil Engineer 1, City of Elgin, IL
Q: Why is good writing important?
A: “I didn’t realize how much writing I would have to do in my profession until my boss dumped my first big project on my desk. A majority of my writing is for memos to the city’s council members explaining why we need this project. If I didn’t have the good writing skills I needed, I would never be able to paint the picture in non engineering terms for these people. It’s really easy to sit there and explain it in conversation, but when you have to condense it to a half a page to get your point across, it becomes quite difficult.”

Name: M Bartley Seigel
Position: Associate Professor of Creative Writing; MTMC Director.
Q: Why is good writing important?
A: “Writing is a knife. In the hands of the skilled and unskilled alike, words cut to the bone. It would be best to handle that responsibility with some care, attention to detail, an ounce of skill, and a pinch of grace, lest we do great harm with our language.”
