Happy Medical Laboratory Professionals Week! 🧪🦠💉🩸

As educators in medical laboratory science, we understand firsthand the critical role that medical laboratory professionals play in patient care. They are the unsung heroes working diligently behind the scenes, performing tests and analyses that are essential for accurate diagnosis, treatment, and disease prevention. They provide clinicians with the vital information they need to make informed decisions about patient care. Whether it's conducting blood tests, analyzing tissue samples, or performing biochemical testing, their expertise and attention to detail are instrumental in improving patient outcomes and advancing medical research.

During this week of celebration, let's take a moment to express our gratitude to the laboratory professionals who work tirelessly to ensure the quality and accuracy of laboratory results. Their dedication to their profession and commitment to excellence deserve our recognition and appreciation.

Congratulations to Dr. Casey Huckins, named permanent chair of the Biological Sciences Department at Michigan Technological University.

“I am excited to continue leading such an outstanding department with its research, teaching, and service excellence,” said Huckins. “Four of our faculty have been Distinguished Teaching Award winners in the last seven years and others have been nominated. Our faculty and staff are recognized and awarded for their service, and our students are inspiring. The department is at the forefront of basic and applied research, with over$2.27 million of research expenditures last year. Funding covers biochemistry and molecular biology, ecology and evolution, environmental science, and health sciences. This research seeks better ways to treat cancer and improve health, understand, and restore communities and ecosystems, decipher genetic influences, and reduce plastic waste, among others.”

Practicum Student Spotlight: Emma N.

🩸Where are you currently completing your practicum?

I am completing my practicum at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium, MI.

🩸What is your favorite aspect of your practicum?

My favorite part of the practicum is getting to work with a bunch of different techs and seeing other ways to do things. I love making slides and doing hands on work!

🩸 Why did you choose a career in Medical Lab Science?

I chose MLS because I love working in healthcare, but nursing wasn’t for me. I like to be behind the scenes while still contributing to a patient's care.

🩸 Share something interesting with us about your practicum!

The coolest thing I’ve seen during my practicum is getting to witness a mass transfusion protocol, it’s was pretty hectic but everyone knew what they needed to do and got it done right away.

🩸 What is something you think others should know about MLS?

I think people should know that the MLS career field is full of amazing people that are always willing to help out no matter what you need. The lab has been such a great family to me and I can’t wait to start my career!

Orientation at the bubble greenhouse was a hit! Students who attended our event received a succulent for their dorm room. 🎉 We hope you all had a great first week! 😄
