We all know students love to chase new experiences, and alumni are no different!

Meet Casey Loring '19, who used the knowledge gained from his astrophysics minor to capture the recent solar eclipse from Iceland:

"I was one of only 300 on the cliffs at Látrabjarg amongst 80,000 tourists and 250,000 Reykjavík residents to get a spot through the clouds to witness totality on Iceland!" Loring said. "What an experience. I'm so lucky!"

How are you spending the last few moments of summer? Whether you're settling into life as a recent grad, finishing an internship, or working on a cool project, let us know in the comments!

We’re cruisin’ down Memory Lane with author Larry Lankton!
I’m
If you took The Automobile in America with Professor Emeritus Lankton, you probably remember lectures like "Success and Excess in the Chromed Ugly Era" or watching American Graffiti in class.
Now, Lankton is back with a brand-new book: Motor City Boomer: The Car Culture That Defined a Generation. Part cultural history and part “auto-biography,” it digs deep into the 1950s-’60s car culture that shaped a generation.

Larry is hitting the road for a book tour this August and September, with stops across Michigan and Illinois—including The Henry Ford on Aug. 30. He’d love to see his former students, some of whom helped with the research that inspired this book, in the crowd!

humanities chair Michael Paul Nelson challenges assumptions about climate events and scientific journalism formats in his latest coauthored paper, recently published in Nature Climate Change. The paper uses the 2021 Pacific Northwest heat dome as a case study for extreme climate events – an event Nelson experienced first-hand.

“How we think about the drivers of vegetative impacts has a lot to do with how we think we can or should respond to those drivers and impacts,” said Nelson. “Our concept of species resilience, for example, is tied to a way of thinking that this research challenges.”

Nelson and coauthor Christopher Still of Oregon State University advocate for climate scientists and ecological caretakers to think beyond preservation, recognize species’ short-term exposure limits, and prepare for difficult intervention decisions in a new ethical light.

The College of Sciences and Arts welcomes Michael Nelson as the new humanities department chair. Nelson comes to Michigan Tech from Oregon State University’s College of Forestry, where he was a professor of environmental ethics and philosophy and director of the Center for the Future of Forests and Society.

“At a university known for creating the future, the humanities ask the questions that determine what kind of future is worth creating. Ideas drive everything we build — and our greatest challenges will not be solved by invention alone, but by the courage to rethink what we value and who we want to become.” – Michael Nelson, humanities department chair
