Somedays, especially when they were young, those hours in the night rocking and nursing and up again an hour later from one crib to another …

those long moments when I don’t know how to make it better for them,

when life swirls so quickly and fiercely that I can hardly stand and they need me to hold them up… all of this.

The container of the mother is so vast. We hold the deepest joys and magic AND the sorrows.

For one day, they will be nearly ready to move to a new city all on their own…

Help me make space in myself for all of it.

What is it I love?

Who am I beyond myself as a mother?

We teach our children to know themselves by knowing ourselves, in the vulnerability of understanding ourselves, the quiet moments when we ask ourselves…

Who am I?

Again and again, over all the years, who am I?

What brings you home into the center of your self? What is it that brings you joy?

We forget and we change and we remember and forget again.

I’m working to remember…

We all want to help the person in front of us who is hurting, as a mother or partner, as a friend… and yet when we interject ourselves into another person’s experience (even with the best of intentions) we step on their experience.

Really when someone else is working their way through something and they come to us, the very best way to be with them, to help them is to stay in our own space, to hold space with them and for them, NOT to fix them.

It’s not wrong to want to make it better, or want ti share in order to connect though so much power comes from just BEING in the space with them. In the river of it all…

Stay quiet. Hear them. Witness. 🤍

To give up the belief that I can change what is, that I can fix it or make anything disappear provides such freedom.

It’s not a question of if instead when and how will life bring storms to our door. It’s not always how we want it, it’s not always what we imagine and yet… our power lies in our ability to navigate.

And in the simplest form, to feel less alone in the really hard stuff is one of the greatest honors in our lives. To ask for our people to hold space for us, to hold space for them.

This is something I work to remember every single day. My knowing tells me that in the practice of it, I am teaching them too
