Allegheny Mountain String Project

Allegheny Mountain String Project Private lessons, ensembles and youth orchestra opportunities in Bath Co., Highland Co. and Alleghany Co.

The AMSP is a music education program of Garth Newel Music Center - Serving Bath, Alleghany, and Highland Counties with private and group instruction for violin, viola, cello and bass. The Allegheny Mountain Strings Project founded by Jaime McArdle & Gretta Sandberg is a program in partnership with the Garth Newel Music Center to bring comprehensive string education to the Allgheny Highlands of Vi

rginia. Emphasis is placed on creative learning and the inclusion of American music in early development- and the American Music System method is an important part of AMSP teaching (though not used exclusively by all instructors). Students learn to improvise- even arrange and compose, as well as chords and harmonies while gaining a solid technique for any european classical piece that comes along! with need-based scholarships and help with finding instruments. We are funded by the Alleghany Foundation, Bath County Arts Association, Highland Arts Council, the Bolar Ruritan Club and private donations as well. Lessons and rehearsals are held at Garth Newel Music Center in Hot Springs, the Highland Center in Montery, and the Clifton Forge School of the Arts.

A special afternoon of music is coming to Garth Newel! 🎹 Join Steve Wogaman (his first performance in Bath County!) on Sunday, August 9 at 4 PM for a benefit piano recital honoring Allegheny Mountain Radio and celebrating the generous gift of a new Steinway piano from Nancy Klein Maguire.

A wonderful way to support local music and community! 🎶

🎹Help us celebrate music, community, and Allegheny Mountain Radio!

Join us Sunday, August 9 at 4 PM in Herter Hall for a very special benefit concert honoring Allegheny Mountain Radio (AMR) — an important voice and treasured part of our community.

The afternoon will also celebrate the generous gift of a new Steinway piano from Nancy Klein Maguire, with pianist Steve Wogaman giving his first Bath County piano recital on our new Steinway.

🎹 Music made possible by generosity. A community strengthened by connection. And an afternoon dedicated to supporting AMR.

A special thank you to Danny Cardwell for sharing the story behind the concert. Take a moment to hear his interview with Steve, then join us August 9 and help support Allegheny Mountain Radio!

What I noticed… is all the bold beautiful colors of these kids. It represents for me how this program celebrates each individual student and their interests, needs, and unique personalities. We don’t look to make kids into some ideal (to us) image, not uniformity- but unity in diversity. We need each and every one to make the whole. I saw them all on the stage tonight at the Masonic Theatre and was reminded again of what a gift they are today… and over the past 16 years.

Come celebrate with us!

We have 2 more cellos coming Sunday- but this is so exciting as we had a dwindling cello studio a few years back and between Kelley Mikkelesen and a grant from the Alleghany Foundation to make lessons more available to our interested cellists we have really grown the cello studio!!
