Memorial Day Service at Garland County Veterans Memorial

Today, May 25th is Memorial Day. Regent Cindy and Bert attended. Flags flown at half staff before the ceremony and raised to full staff after. Richard Green , CMSgt of the USAF was the Master of Ceremonies. Sherry Bales sang the National Anthem. Seven children led by Hazel Hill led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Reverend Doug Jones gave the invocation.

Bill Borough, Hot Springs City manager, delivered a powerful and emotional speech..
Lieutenant Colonel Lucas M Coston, the Director of Staff for the 34th Combat Training Squadron at LRAFB , read the names on the newly placed bricks.
Rocky Hall of the Arkansas AIR National Guard and the USAF presented the wreaths to represent all the wars where our American troops gave the ultimate sacrifice. Wreaths were also presented for Purple Heart and POW-MIA.
Ross Rumore USMC retired , opened the ceremony with the bugle call and closed the program with TAPS.

John Percifull Chapter NSDAR recently held our regular May meeting at a local Tea Shoppe.. ASDAR State Regent Charline Manning and State Vice Regent ChristinaTwardowski. attended. Both ladies spoke to the group about DAR projects. The chapter donated $100 to the State Rgent's Scholarship Fund Project. Cindy reported that the Parks department planted our elm tree. Dedication will be at a later date. Members were encouraged to register for the Caddo district meeting for Flag Day. Teri spoke to the group about the need for canvas bags, duffel bags and or luggage needed by the Call for children to carry their belongings in as they are being placed in foster care.

We all enjoyed a delicious lunch of chicken salad sandwiches, black berries , grapes and cake. .

This meaningful event commemorates the 250th Anniversary of our nation and honors the enduring legacy of liberty through the symbolic planting of elm trees.

The program will include:
Presentation of the Colors by the Hot Springs JROTC
Presentation of a Community Service Award
Presentation of a Conservation Award
Tree planting and plaque dedication

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Arkansas Forestry Commission for generously donating the trees for this dedication.

We encourage all Arkansas Daughters to attend and be part of this historic celebration as we reflect on our shared heritage and look ahead to America’s 250th anniversary.

We hope you will join us for this memorable occasion.

TODAY IN HISTORY APRIL 19, 1775

On April 19, 1775, the American Revolutionary War began with the Battles of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. Around 700 British troops seeking to seize colonial weapons clashed with local militiamen, sparking the "shot heard 'round the world". This triggered an eight-year war for independence, resulting in over 300 combined casualties that first day.
