For their Unit of Inquiry: How We Organize Ourselves, second grade participated in an exciting learning experience called Market Day. Each class created DIY items such as sensory bottles, finger puppets, stress balls, decorative items, journals, and magnets.
Students then learned how to market their products by designing posters and promoting pre-orders during morning announcements. On Market Day, they sold their handmade items to other students across the school, practicing real-world skills such as communication, collaboration, and entrepreneurship.
Through their hard work and teamwork, second grade raised $240, which was proudly donated to The CALL, a local organization that supports children in foster care. This meaningful experience helped students understand how goods and services are organized within a community while also making a positive impact beyond the classroom. We also had Beta Club students work throughout the year to collect items to donate to The CALL. They collected blankets, sheet sets, hygiene products, and so much more. Way to be caring IB learners!!

Today, Mrs. De La Paz visited Mrs. Boles’ classroom and shared about her home country and culture. As part of our current unit on nutrition, students have been exploring how different cultures meet their nutritional needs. We recently read “Please Pass the Bugs!”, which introduces foods eaten around the world, including insects that are rich in protein and nutrients, such as fried crickets.
To bring our learning to life, students had the opportunity to observe several staff members demonstrate the IB Learner Profile attribute of being risk-takers by trying fried crickets. This experience sparked great conversations about culture, nutrition, and being open-minded when learning about traditions from around the world. Our students enjoyed observing this unique experience and learning more about how different cultures approach food and nutrition! 🌎🦗

🎗️ Making a Difference Through Action! 🎗️

As part of their Sixth Grade Exhibition, our students took their learning beyond the classroom by researching cancer and exploring its impact on individuals, families, and communities. Through their inquiry, they discovered ways they could make a meaningful difference and organized a fundraiser to support a local organization dedicated to helping those affected by cancer.

Today, they had the honor of presenting the funds they raised to Virginia Laliberte founder of PALS, a local cancer support organization. Their hard work, compassion, and commitment to service demonstrate the true spirit of the IB learner profile and Exhibition experience.

We are incredibly proud of these students for turning their learning into action and making a positive impact in our community. Thank you to everyone who supported their fundraiser and helped make this project a success!

We celebrated the winning class, Mrs. Garner’s class, with a soda party!! 🥤

Second-grade students enjoyed a presentation from Chartwells, where they learned how different fruits and vegetables can be blended together to make delicious and nutritious smoothies. This experience tied into their Arts and Letters module and their Unit of Inquiry, How We Organize Ourselves, by helping students explore advertising, consumer choices, and the role money plays in marketing products. What a yummy lesson!

Had an amazing time with the students at Park Magnet School today!

We talked about some of our Machine Words and what they mean in everyday life.

Focus, being present.

Accountability, taking responsibility for your actions.

Control, thinking before you act and handling your emotions.

But we did not just talk about it. We got up, got active, and worked on some basic skills as well. I was impressed with how quickly the students picked up the movements and how engaged they were during our discussions.

Seeing young people learn, participate, ask questions, and challenge themselves is always rewarding. It was truly a joy spending time with these students today. Watching them learn the basics so quickly and actively participate in our conversations made the experience even better.

Thank you to Park Magnet for having me. I truly appreciate the opportunity and had a great time with the students today!
