It might be challenging to pick just one! The acclaimed and prolific writer and poet has published 20 books including novels, short story collections, and poetry collections.

Rash's work chronicling the challenges and the beauty of life in the Appalachian mountains has earned him numerous accolades over his career, including the O. Henry Prize (three times!) and the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction (twice!) from the N.C. Literary and Historical Association.

Jim Stokely will share from his mother Wilma Dykeman’s memoir, Family of Earth: A Southern Mountain Childhood, reflecting on her early years growing up in the Beaverdam Valley and the people and places that shaped her life and writing.

This month, we’ll explore Wilma Dykeman’s The French Broad through the lens of environmental justice and the French Broad River ecosystem. Together, we’ll discuss selected chapters, enjoy light refreshments, and connect with others who share a love for our region’s history, literature, and natural resources.
