By : Suartz Tops
The Nazcas, a pre-incaic civilization that flourished on the southern coast of Peru between the 200s. C. and 700 d. C. , they left a fascinating legacy that continues to intrigue archaeologists and scholars to this day. Its greatest mystery lies in the enigmatic lines and geoglyphs that plotted in the desert, forming a vast map of geometric figures, animals and plants that spans hundreds of miles.
A Legacy Written in the Arena:
The Nazca Lines, as they are known, are a set of geoglyphs, gigantic figures etched on the surface of the desert. They are thought to have been created by the Nazcas by scrapping the desert's dark surface layer, revealing the clear sand beneath. These lines span over 800 square miles, forming a complex labyrinth of geometric figures, animals such as monkeys, birds, spiders, fish, and plants. Some of the best-known figures include a hummingbird, spider, monkey and fish.
An Unsolved Enigma:
The purpose of Nazca lines remains a mystery. Various theories have been proposed, ranging from being an astronomical calendar to representing a map of the region or a religious ritual. Some researchers believe the lines served as a pathway for ceremonies or processions, while others suggest they were a way of communicating with the gods. The most accepted theory is that the Nazca lines were related to religious and astronomical rituals, since many of the figures appear to be aligned with the sun and stars.
A Testimony of Nazca Culture:
Nazca Lines are a testament to Nazca culture, a civilization that developed a complex irrigation system, exceptional ceramics, and a rich textile tradition. His art, which is reflected in his geoglyphs, is a sample of his knowledge of astronomy, geometry and symbolism. The Nazcas were also skilled potters, creating vases with complex, colorful designs that represent scenes from their everyday life, their religious beliefs, and their myths.
A Legacy That Endures:
Nazca lines are a cultural treasure that has survived the test of time. Its mystery continues to captivate humanityโs imagination, reminding us of the ability of ancient civilizations to create monumental works and express their culture through unique ways. Although the purpose of the Nazca lines remains an enigma, their existence reminds us of the complexity and creativity of pre-Colombian cultures.
