Several weeks ago, we were blessed to have Mrs. Gaskell come teach us about creation & the (false) idea of evolution. She told us about the book “From Goo to You By Way of the Zoo” and how that is NOT TRUE! The Bible tells us that we are fearfully & wonderfully made! ❤️

Mrs. Gaskell had us make some goo. We got to create it & play with it a bit before talking about the reactions that made our goo, or elephant’s toothpaste. 😉

Then she lead us through Genesis & showed us how God created different “kinds”. What a joy to know that each type of living thing was created intentionally & not just goo. We highlighted some of those references, looked at some different kinds of animals, & then created an Earth-shaped book that told the story of creation that we could take home & share with our families. 🌎

Last week, students of Armor Academy & their families participated in the fall field trip. 🍁

We took a rainy day to go to the new Moritz Library on the campus of Benedictine College. We were greeted & led through the different exhibits by a fantastic host dressed in the clothes from the 18th century. She shared the interesting books & letters they have on display there. I absolutely loved that the children were encouraged to touch the books & turn the pages! They were able to interact with some very old documents. 📖

Our guide explained some of the documents that helped the writers of the Declaration of Independence come up with the language & wording they wanted to use, as well as their beliefs. And how monks would spend their days writing out the words, almost in an art form. One of the Bibles there was so interesting to look through. 🇺🇸

Across the hall, the children learned more about the signing of the Declaration of Independence in a room that looks exactly like the one used 250 years ago. (As it turns out, there were even some spelling errors in those early copies!) Each student then signed their own name to our own copy of an early version of the document. It only has John Hancock & all the Armor Academy students on it! ✒️

After a tour of the painting & getting to ring a replica of the Liberty Bell, we headed outside for a group picture in front of the beautiful bell tower. 🔔

Much thanks to Mrs. Welte & her knowledge of so much US history. All of the students, from our Kindergarteners to our 8th graders, were included & were able to interact with all parts of the morning. Thank you for that! 😊

After checking out the view of the river & our neighboring state, we crossed the bridge to visit Crockett Family Farms & Event Center. It was the perfect spot to eat our lunch under the covered pavilion. The kid-sized tractors, hula-hoops, and flying pigs were a hit! 😂

Each kiddo got to pick a pie pumpkin before heading out. It’s such a beautiful farm & we are so thankful for their hospitality! 🎃

As the rain continually drips down on this September day, this seems worth sharing.

About 2 months ago, I shared the first image. Cooper had just finished up the floor at the school for me. That night, the wind blew & the rain pelted the north side of the house. I woke up in the middle of the night knowing there was a problem. I drove out to the school to find this & I fell apart. I spent the next hour trying my hardest to stop the water and soak up what was already there. I felt so defeated.

Fast forward to that first or second week of school….I asked the older children to help me transport the books from the upstairs level of my home out to the school. We literally just dumped them in.

After we had moved them all, it dawned on me that this was a similar image to what I had seen just a few weeks earlier. But God….

When I was weak, He made me strong.
Where I thought there was ruin, He flourished.
What I was afraid was damaged, He repaired beyond my wildest dreams.
Where there was sadness & heartache, He restored & is using for His Glory.
What seemed awful, was covered with wonderful children & books….AMEN!!

I know the Lord is teaching me the things for a reason. I know the Lord is using this school & these incredible kids to spread His Word. But sometimes I forget that He is also using the delayed moving, and the mud, and the wet floor to remind me that I am to sing even in the middle of the problem ….praise Him in the storm. And I pray that I can share my lessons with others to share of His Goodness.

Thankful for it all. ❤️

As we continue to look for a music teacher, the children continue to suffer through me leading them. 😂

Sorry for my flat, intolerable tune, but doesn’t that 115 year old piano sound great? 🎹

We’ve been singing praise songs, hymns, & a few childhood favorites that I remember our music teachers teaching us. 🥰

One of those songs was “Today is Monday”, which is also a book with illustrations by Eric Carle. I used to LOVE singing that with Mrs. Metcalf behind the piano. 🎶

I’m so far from her, but wanted to share our version today. And I do know the days of the week, so pay no attention to my bloop! 🥴

Sometimes I like to use literature as a springboard for an art project. For this Make-It-Monday’s project, we read “Flashlight” by Lizi Boyd. Actually, we didn’t read it because there are no words! 😊

This wordless book uses illumination in the night to tell a story of a boy walking through the forest. 🦊

I challenged students to draw a night scene that they could remember and find a way to illuminate a part of it, drawing the lit-up portion in color. 🔦

Take a look at these masterpieces! They did such a great job! We didn’t put names on them so see if you can guess who each “Flashlight” image belongs to. ☺️

When we have everyone together, I like to do some group projects that cover our theme. Since we are currently learning about God’s love through serving others, we read “Ten Apples Up on Top!” 🍎 by Dr. Seuss & worked in groups on a plan to see how we might stack apples on our own heads. We are also working on problem solving, so this was a great way to put heads together & see what the kids could come up with.

Initially, the kids tried one apple on top. That was kind of hard! 😊 Some felt compelled to try stacking two on their own head, while others wanted to work together to stack apples.

I love seeing the kids serving each other, helping & encouraging their schoolmates along the way. ❤️

As we inch a little closer to completing more parts of the building, let’s talk about the chalkboard area.

It has remained mostly the same since we purchased the building in 2024. We were fortunate to find the other two slate pieces, but they were damaged by water so they can’t go back on the wall.

Last summer, when we pulled up the tile, we realized there had originally been a stage there, as most one room schoolhouses had.

We’ve since covered that area with carpet &, most recently, added magnetic whiteboards to either side of the slate board. We still have some framing adjustments to make, but having the whiteboards has made teaching much easier!

Before the whiteboards arrived, I asked the kids to write a verse they knew on the wall. It’s very special knowing the Word of God, written by the hands of the kids learning in this building, wrote them. ❤️

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Our first Make-It-Monday was a hot one! So we busted out the popsicles, listened to “Larry the Line”, and proceeded to put the two together with our art project!

After finishing up their popsicles, the kids drew lines of all different kinds on their paper. Using their choice of colors, then they painted in-between the lines. Finally, we cut them out, added a stick, & glued them on a background.

It was a great way to kick off our masterpieces for the year! 😊
