The Center for Forensic Science Research & Education We are dedicated to research, education, and outreach in the forensic sciences.

The Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (CFSRE) was established at the Fredric Rieders Family Foundation in 2010. The CFSRE conducts research, development, and new technology assessment, and delivers educational and training services for the forensic science community and beyond. Our educational programs include short-term placement for visiting scholars and researchers; partnerships to deliver degree programs at area universities; and continuing professional development for forensic scientists, law enforcement, and legal professionals. The CFSRE provides forensic science information tools and strategies, and training in forensic science principles for criminal justice professionals. Our facility has teaching and research laboratory space with state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation to support grant-funded research, innovative method developments and validation, and academic scholarship activities.

Yesterday, we officially kicked off our newest educational partnership with the University of Florida!

We are thrilled to welcome students enrolled in UF’s online Master’s in Forensic Science and Master’s in Forensic DNA and Serology programs to our Horsham laboratory for a week of hands-on training!

Throughout the week, students will work alongside our practicing forensic scientists, gaining real-world experience using state-of-the-art equipment. From evidence examination and serological testing to DNA extraction, amplification, and interpretation, students will experience the complete workflow of a modern forensic biology laboratory.

We are proud to partner with the University of Florida to bring classroom learning to life and help prepare the next generation of forensic scientists!

Yesterday at the 2026 Robert F. Borkenstein Course on The Effects of Drugs on Human Performance and Behavior, attendees had the opportunity to hear directly from our distinguished faculty during an engaging panel discussion!

Each year, professionals from toxicology, forensic science, traffic safety, law enforcement, government, and the legal community come together for this unique opportunity to learn from some of the world’s leading experts in drug-impaired driving.

🔬🧪🔍 Our Fall 2026 forensic science field trip season is officially underway at the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education!🔍🧪🔬

We were excited to welcome our first group of students into the lab for a hands-on introduction to the world of forensic science.

Throughout the morning, students stepped into the role of forensic scientists as they rotated through Forensic Biology, Chemistry, and Toxicology, using laboratory techniques and evidence from an interactive mock case to help piece together what happened.

A huge thank you to our staff and Graduate Assistants who helped make the day such a great experience. We’re looking forward to welcoming even more students to CFSRE throughout the year!

Yesterday we kicked off the first day of the 2026 Robert F. Borkenstein Course on The Effects of Drugs on Human Performance and Behavior with our Chief Scientist, Dr. Barry Logan.

Congratulations to our Forensic Toxicologist, Savannah Baker, and our Director of Forensic Toxicology and Chemistry, Dr. Alex Krotulski, on their recent publication in Clinical Toxicology, Volume 64, Issue 10! https://ow.ly/ZALG50ZTxl3

Their study, “Serum cannabinoid profiles of emergency department patients presenting with cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome and acute cannabis intoxication,” examined differences in serum cannabinoid concentrations among emergency department patients presenting with either cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) or acute cannabis intoxication.

The research evaluated concentrations of delta-9-THC and its metabolites, delta-8-THC, and common non-psychoactive phytocannabinoids, contributing valuable data to our understanding of cannabinoid-related presentations in emergency medicine.

Congratulations to Savannah and Alex on this important contribution to the field!
