Congratulations to Andrey, Matthew, Dayce, and Jude on their well-earned promotions. Every one of these athletes has earned their rank through consistency, hard work, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
šŸ„‹ Andrey – Blue Belt
Andrey has truly grown into a martial artist. Having competed since he was a kid, it’s been incredible watching him mature—not only as an athlete but as a young man. At just 16 years old, he’s constantly testing himself, stepping into competition, and challenging his abilities alongside his brother. His Blue Belt is well deserved, and I’m excited to see where this next chapter takes him.
šŸ„‹ Matthew – Purple Belt
Matthew didn’t start with us he’s newer to the team, but you wouldn’t know it by the way he approaches training. He shows up consistently, asks great questions, puts in the work, and has embraced our approach with an open mind. His intentionality and willingness to learn have accelerated his development tremendously. This Purple Belt represents his commitment to the process, and I’m excited to continue watching him grow.
šŸ„‹ Dayce – Brown Belt
Dayce came to HQ as a Blue Belt, and watching his evolution has been incredible. His improvement has been nothing short of remarkable. Whether he’s competing, training, or helping teammates, Dayce brings full effort every single day. He’s an exceptional athlete, an outstanding teammate, and someone I trust completely to help carry the culture we’ve built at HQ. His Brown Belt is incredibly well deserved, and I’m proud to have been part of his journey.
šŸ„‹ Jude – Blue Belt
Jude has earned every bit of this promotion. From the beginning, he was the student taking notes, asking questions, and doing everything he could to understand the sport on a deeper level. Since then, he’s continued to compete, challenge himself, help his teammates, and grow into a tremendous martial artist. His curiosity, consistency, and willingness to learn have been some of his greatest strengths, and it’s been awesome watching him develop.
As I always tell our students, the belt isn’t the destination. It’s simply a recognition of the work that’s already been done and a reminder that there’s still more to learn.

There have been some MAJOR level-ups at HQ recently, and these absolutely deserve recognition.
Huge congratulations to:
šŸ„‹ Jordan – promoted to Blue Belt
šŸ„‹ Anthony – promoted to Blue Belt
šŸ„‹ Matthias – promoted to Blue Belt
šŸ„‹ Alex – promoted to Purple Belt
šŸ„‹ Landon – promoted to Brown Belt

Every one of these promotions means something different, but they all share one thing in common:
time, consistency, sacrifice, and belief in the process.

Jordan has become one of the staples of HQ. Always showing up, always helping teammates, always pushing the room forward. Reliable, hardworking, and someone who genuinely cares about the growth of others.

Anthony has been an incredible asset to the culture of the gym. Whether it’s helping at practice, stepping into competition, supporting teammates, or simply bringing positive energy to the room, he’s earned every bit of this promotion.

Matthias has been one of the most consistent learners we’ve had. Never making excuses, always asking thoughtful questions, always willing to work through difficult practices and uncomfortable moments. His improvement has been tremendous.

Alex… man, what can I say. I’ve known this kid for years. We’ve traveled all over for competitions (always doing 30 bracketsšŸ˜‚jk but pretty close), and watching him grow into the athlete and young man he is today has been incredible. At only 18 years old, he’s balanced success in wrestling, football, golf, jiu-jitsu, music and academics. His Purple Belt is beyond deserved. He has an unbelievably bright future ahead of him.

And finally, Landon. One of the ORIGINAL HQ guys. We met years ago at an open mat, and from there he became one of the foundations of this gym. Countless morning sessions, countless rounds, countless conversations. When we first started transitioning into the constraints-led approach, Landon was one of the first to fully buy in and challenge himself through the process. His Brown Belt represents years of trust, hard work, leadership, and growth.

Truthfully, without these individuals, HQ would not be what it is today. I’ll end it off by saying, I’m so grateful to be a small of all of your journeys!

Competition Recap – HQ Represented Well Today

Another strong day for the team. From morning matches to the final fight of the night, our athletes stepped up, tested themselves, and represented HQ with professionalism and heart.

As always, our focus remains the same:
Win or lose, we learn. We grow. We improve.

Highlights from the Day:

• Gabe stepped into a tough division against experienced opponents and showed incredible composure and maturity. No wins today, but major growth.

• Anthony battled through bracket complications and still put together a strong performance with multiple wins and valuable experience.

• Alex & Andrey competed across several divisions and continue to show why their futures are bright. Their willingness to compete despite busy schedules speaks volumes.

• Riley looked dominant in his opening match before being caught in his second—great experience and more lessons to build from.

• Jenny went undefeated against experienced competitors and looked sharp throughout the day.

• Isaac brought his usual grit and toughness, representing himself and the room well.

• Mathew closed the night with a strong performance in a tough fight. In less than two months together, his development has been impressive, and this is only the beginning.

• Cheney unfortunately suffered an injury during competition—wishing her a smooth recovery.

• Jude was unable to compete after falling ill, but we’ll get him back out there soon.

Competition gives us feedback.
It exposes what’s working, what needs refinement, and where growth must happen next.

Proud of every athlete who stepped up today.
The HQ way remains the same—show up, test yourself, learn, and keep building.

Back to work tomorrow.

Through the trees, through the noise… we find the way.

The focus never changes—skill development, growth, and showing up.

Tomorrow We Test Ourselves šŸ„‹šŸ”„

The team steps up tomorrow—putting themselves out there, testing their skills, and embracing the challenge.

As always, the message stays the same:
Win or lose—we’re proud of you.
We love you, we support you, and we respect anyone willing to step on the mat or into the cage and challenge themselves.

We’ve got a strong group competing:
• Some stepping out there for the first time
• Others continuing their journey and sharpening their edge
• Good luck tomorrow- Gabe, Anthony, Cheney, Riley, Alex, Andrey, and Jenny.

And we’ve got Mathew fighting at Throne, kicking off the night as the first fight. He’s put in serious work, stayed consistent, and shown what dedication to the craft looks like. It’s been incredible watching his growth in such a short time.

Moments like these matter. Being there with the team, supporting each other, and sharing the experience—this is what it’s all about.

Tomorrow, we keep it simple:
šŸ‘‰ One task at a time
šŸ‘‰ Stay present
šŸ‘‰ Trust the work

Let’s go show what the HQ way is all about. šŸ’Ŗ

Real Training. Real Learning. Real Growth. šŸ„‹

Great day of training yesterday—huge thank you to Matthias for capturing the session. It’s been awesome working with him and seeing his creativity come through. We’re excited to start sharing more of what we do.

This is just a small glimpse into how we train at HQ.

We don’t rely on rehearsed moves or scripted drills.
We focus on live, constrained environments where athletes learn by solving real problems in real time.

Our approach:
• Ecological Dynamics → how we understand learning & adaptation
• Constraints-Led Approach → how we build skill through live interaction

What does that mean for you?
šŸ‘‰ You’re not memorizing—you’re learning how to adapt
šŸ‘‰ You’re not guessing—you’re building real understanding
šŸ‘‰ You’re not waiting—you’re solving problems every session

Everything we do is alive, intentional, and skill-driven. That’s why our athletes feel the difference.

Grappling Industries – Minneapolis Recap šŸ„‹šŸ”„

Proud of Jude and Riley for stepping up and competing on a Sunday. Both showed grit, composure, and a willingness to test themselves—exactly what we’re about.

Riley moved up a weight class to get more matches but ended up still only having one opponent, after the bracket change, that being said he still faced a very game opponent.
• Match 1: Strangle finish
• Match 2: 13–0 decision
Riley stepped up, took the challenge, and delivered- earning gold.

Jude had a tough week leading into this—wasn’t even sure he’d be able to compete. But he showed up anyway and put his best foot forward.
• 2 wins in a tough bracket
• Fought through adversity and stayed composed
That’s what matters.

Competition isn’t just about results—it’s about showing up, adapting, and growing under pressure. Both of these guys did that today.

Huge thank you to everyone back home who kept HQ running. We’ve had new members coming in, and it’s great seeing the gym continue to grow.

Back to the lab. Keep sharpening. Keep building.

Big Congrats to Matt Johnson on Earning His Purple Belt šŸ’œšŸ„‹

Today I want to take a moment to give a huge shoutout to Matt Johnson on earning his Purple Belt. Matt has been training with HQ for years now, and the growth he’s shown—on and off the mats—has been incredible.

His decision-making, his coaching ability, and his presence in the room have all leveled up. Not only is he my business partner, but he’s also one of my favorite people to train with and be around. He’s a genuine asset to HQ and an even better human outside of it.

Matt is a cornerstone of our morning crew. When he first started showing up, there were only a few of us grinding early. Now, alongside Coach Landon, he’s helped build a strong, consistent morning culture—and they’ve been creating monsters in those early hours ever since.

He came in as a white belt, stayed consistent, challenged himself, and earned his way to purple the right way. Knowledgeable, humble, driven, and always willing to push—Matt embodies what we want HQ to be about.

We’re proud of you, brother. We appreciate everything you do for HQ, and we’re excited to keep building, growing, and leveling up together.

If you see Matt around, take a moment to congratulate him—he’s earned it. šŸ’Ŗ
