It was rare for children to go to preschool when I was of preschool age. I did go to a play school called Happy Days (I love that name!) a couple of morning a week when I was four years old. I still have memories of the school and I remember being so excited to play in their kitchen set up. It was tucked away in a cozy corner and it had baby dolls, a crib, a play table and play food. I remember settling in with the kids and being consumed with imaginary play. I also remember the school made a figure eight out of concrete in the backyard where we would ride the tricycles. I would pretend I was driving on a real road. 🙂 After preschool, I went onto half-day kindergarten, which was also play based. Proper “school” started in the first grade, which was still full of child-led play in the afternoons.

I have seen first hand the change in children. I have seen first hand the illusion that is presented to parents that their child will fall behind if they aren’t in a classroom setting. I have seen children lose their ability to imagine, because they aren’t given the time or the space.

We are lucky we live in an area that has a plentiful amount of play-based schools for children that are amazing.

I am so grateful I am able to provide a warm space where children feel welcomed, relaxed, empowered and ready to imagine! I am also happy I am able to provide occasional days like this for the big kids, because they need this time too. ❤️

What a beautiful day with our beautiful Polka Tots family.
Slowing down when the world seems to be speeding up. Being present is a gift. Children know this best. ❤️

Our day…

An older two year old hasn’t quite learned how to unbutton her sweater. Before I had a chance to help her, a four year old happily said she has learned how to unbutton shirts and she will help the two year old. ❤️

We read so many books on empathy and kindness. Two children stepped in and offered a few of their play figures to a child who voiced that they did not have any. At Polka Tots, voicing what you need and expressing how you feel is something we work on here. ❤️

We worked on an open-ended art project. Each child picked out four of their favorite yarn colors. *Organic learning occurs throughout each and every day. ❤️

And of course, unlimited outdoor playtime in the sunshine, which is another gift to each and everyone one us. ❤️

It was a great start to our school year. ☀️ Our relaxed routine allows the children ample time to engage in their creative play.

Fresh play dough has been made and the whole playroom has been taken apart and deep cleaned for the start of the new school year. I’m so excited to see all the happy faces tomorrow! ☺️

One week off to prep and then all of our Polka Tots will be back for the new school year. 🥰

My play-school is full for the upcoming school year, but I will be offering drop-off playtime the first Friday and Saturday of each month.

The first dates will be September 5th and 6th.
