This Summer please remember to dechlorinate water before draining your pool for any maintenance or other needs. Refraining from adding chlorine or any other chemicals for at least 5 days before draining will help to protect our local waterways. The Stormwater Department thanks you in advance for your cooperation and have a great time at the pool!

Johnny Fishpatrick explains that storm drains lead directly to the nearest creek, stream or river and educates about all the trash, soap, pet waste and fertilizer that has made its way to his "house".

Remember-never put yard debris down the storm drains. Not only does it clog the drainage system and cause flooding, but it can harm our local waterways.

If you live near a water body, keep a vegetated buffer between your yard and the water. This helps to remove excess nutrients from yard fertilizer and pollutants from stormwater runoff before it reaches our local waters.

All pollutants making their way into our storm drains harm wildlife and reduce seafood harvesting opportunities and recreational access to waterways. Beach closures can occur due to excessive amounts of pollutants and bacteria. Lets do our best to ensure only rain enters our storm drains.

These pollutants can find their way into our local waterways (through storm drains) as well as coastal waters because the Cape Fear River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Lets do our best to keep our recreational waters safe for everyone, including wildlife.

These pollutants are not welcome in our drinking water and raise treatment costs, lets do our best to keep them out of storm drains.

As a follow up to our last post: When performing any kind of digging or dirt-spreading activities, please remember to keep dirt properly contained and off of roads and out of storm drains. Blockages in the storm sewer system can occur over time due in part to sediment accumulation. Excessive amounts of sediment in our waterways can lead to elevated levels of pollutants, bacteria and pathogens that can aid waterborne disease outbreaks that have the potential to harm humans as well as wildlife. The Stormwater Department thanks you in advance for your cooperation!
