NASRO would like to recognize SRO Toynika Hall of the Richland County Sheriff's Office (South Carolina) as the SRO of the Month for June.
In May, Hall was conducting a patrol around the elementary school she serves when she noticed a suspicious vehicle following her. She led the vehicle to the rear of the school building, where both she and the driver exited their vehicles. Hall instructed the driver — a 44-year-old man unknown to both her and school staff — to leave the campus.
The man returned to his vehicle and began firing at Hall's patrol car. Remaining calm under pressure, Hall evaded the gunfire and safely re-entered the school, where she immediately initiated a lockdown.
The suspect was later located on campus with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though authorities have not determined whether the injury was intentional. Thanks to Hall's quick actions and decisive response, no students, staff members or other individuals were injured, and the school remained secure.
Thank you for your bravery and commitment to protecting students, Officer Hall.

NASRO Region 8 Director Todd Pearson and NASRO Instructor Ted Dau representing the association well at the Minnesota Juvenile Officers Association Conference in Duluth, Minnesota.
SROs, don't forget the value of your state associations! If you have the opportunity to attend state-level conferences, we encourage you to go. We love seeing you at our national conferences, but we know attendance isn't realistic for every SRO every year. State association conferences are a budget-friendly opportunity to enhance your skills as an SRO and network with boots-on-the-ground SROs and school safety professionals in your area.

NASRO is honored to recognize SRO Francisco Saucedo and SRO Juan Ramirez of the Aurora Police Department (Colorado) as 2026 National Award of Valor recipients.
The National Award of Valor recognizes acts of courage and valor above and beyond what would normally be expected. On January 7, 2026, Officer Ramirez was notified that a student at Overland High School might have had a firearm. He and other school staff members discreetly removed the student from class, separating him from his backpack, where a stolen Springfield 9mm pistol was recovered without incident. After the arrest, Officer Saucedo joined Officer Ramirez in interviewing the student in Spanish, building trust and obtaining key information about the weapon and its connection to other crimes. SROs Saucedo and Ramirez are among three people from across the nation who will receive the 2026 National Award of Valor.
Congratulations to Officer Ramirez and Officer Saucedo!
