Acorn Camp was such a blast this year! We were so excited for the campers to get to work on mink hair ties, beaded capes, and leather bras. It was very impressive to see they turned out so good after the girls were so diligent in their work. We had incredible presenters, Melodie George-Moore, Shoshoni Gensaw-Hostler, and Councilwoman Dawn Blake-McQuillen, who taught us about how to live in a good way and traditional storytelling, flower dances and creating regalia, and about Na:tinixw and our responsibilities to help care for our home. We had some special visitors at camp, Gloria Vigil and Patty Joseph, who visited with the campers and encouraged them and shared their own experiences. We couldn’t have pulled it off without the support of all our counselors - Ivy, Muriel, Kiges, Kinehstan, Levi, Ki’Ge:ch, Auhna, Verissa, Roxy, and Natalia - you all were so helpful and great with your campers. Also, big thank you to our Coordinator Aymee Colegrove, our camp cooks Kim Pole and Jess Peters, Cultural project leaders Cheriku Lamebear, Diane James, Darian Ferris, and Teresina Obie, and NDN Center staff for all your help making this event happen for the youth in our community. And the support of our partners, Hoopa Education, Hoopa TANF, HCATEP, KMC Cultural Path to Wellness, KMC Behavioral Health, Hoopa Museum, Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Program, Office of Self Governance, and Boys & Girls Club. Thank you, everyone, for your participation and support, and we can’t wait to see you again next year!

Warrior Camp is all wrapped up for 2026! We appreciate all the time, energy, and effort that everyone poured into our camp. We had presentations from Hoopa Forestry's Mark Higley, Save California Salmon, and our Camp Coordinator Thomas Joseph to teach the kids about the natural world around us. We heard stories from Joe Orozco, Melody George-Moore, and Glenn Moore to share history and traditional teachings with the campers. Kyle Brown showed the boys make their own eel hooks, and Bubba Riggins showed the boys how to make gill nets to show the kids how they can harvest eels and salmon to take care of themselves and their families. All the kids finished an eel hook by the end of camp after they put in the work sanding their handles until they were just right, and by the end of camp two nets were completed with the help of presenters, counselors, and campers which we then raffled off between the campers who continued working on it after the presentation.
Two of our counselors went above and beyond and we really appreciate them. Phillip Vigil-O'Rourke brought regalia and dressed the boys for a demonstration where everyone learned something new and also brought a drum so the boys could play cards. Marion (Little Buck) McCovey brought sticks and tossels and taught the boys some new moves and let them play a few games. We appreciate all of you for sharing your knowledge with our campers and we hope the kids who attended camp carry what they learned about our culture and traditions in a good way.

We also would like to acknowledge Onaleece, Dania, and Teresina from Education. Onaleece and Dania made laps around the park in the morning on rattlesnake patrol, and Teresina helped with behind the scenes errands. Councilman Robert Kane Jr donated gatorade for our campers which was greatly appreciated in the heat. Talon Davis from the Boys and Girls Club came to the creek with us everyday to help keep an eye on the kids as they were swimming. Rey Martinez and James Gensaw Jr from Two Feathers who came to support. And of course, our awesome camp cooks Jess Peters and Kim Pole who made sure there was plenty of delicious food for our campers.

Our NDN Center Staff - Lindsey Billings, Kisdyante Joseph, Sequoyah Valentine, and Ashtyn Gordon, put in a lot of late nights and early mornings to make sure Warrior Camp ran smoothly and we appreciate their dedication to our youth.

Thank you to our program/department partners, Hoopa TANF, Cultural Path to Wellness, Hoopa Forestry, Recreation, HCATEP, Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Program, and Hoopa Education. We couldn't pull these camps off without your support.

We also have applications available at our office on 92 Orchard St. posted on the door. We have a drop box next to our door that you can leave the applications in.

Acorn and Warrior Camp applications are available now! We are excited to see all the kiddos for a fun few days of cultural projects, presentations, and fun in the sun.

Applications will close on June 30, 2026 and our spots in both camps are limited so spots will be first come first serve.

Applications will be available at 92 orchard st., the front offices at Hoopa Elementary School and Jr./Sr. High School, and the education office.

He:yung Ahtine'! Our spring break activities are all wrapped up and we want to share some photos with you and show our appreciation for everyone who helped make this happen.

We are grateful to our teachers who stepped up for the kids, Keg Super and Dr. George "Pordie" Blake who taught the boys, and Dania Rose and Cheriku Lamebear who helped them. And we are grateful for our talented and amazing staff Darian Ferris, Teresina Obie (Education), and Lindsey Billings who taught the girls. We are also grateful for our tribal department partners who helped us make this event successful, Hoopa Tribal Education Association, Hoopa TANF, and HCATEP who all supported in different ways.

The boys made sticks and tossels, cards, and wooden spoons, and the girls made leather bras, mink wrap hair ties, and beaded capes. They all learned or honed their skill sets, gained an appreciation for the hard work and time that goes into these projects, and left with beautiful hand crafted cultural items they should all be proud of. Our hearts are full seeing all the kids who showed up and worked hard on these projects.

We also want to say thank you to the families that shared their kids' time with us and trusted us to teach them something new in a good way. We appreciate your time and effort to bring them to us and pick them up each day. These events cannot happen without community support and families who take advantage of these opportunities we work so hard to offer.
