08/20/2026 Update from Angel Korb, ECE Director: I met with TEPA and communicated with IHS today and our levels indicate that the ECF is expected to be able to open to normal services on Monday, August 24, 2026. Please be advised that we will still have air purifiers running throughout the building and inside the classrooms. Thank you to our partners at K'ima:w Medical Center, TEPA, Plant Management, and our HVAC technician for all your help in making our building safe for our students.

Also, I would like to send a shout out to our classroom teachers and staff for working together to distribute homework packets and food boxes to our families this week. Please enjoy some pictures of the hard work they have put in to their classrooms to welcome our students to our new Program Year! See you Monday, August 24, 2026. Thank you!

08/19/2026 Update from Angel Korb, ECE Director: The ECF Building will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, August 20, 2026. The HVAC technician completed the recommended corrective work and Tribal EPA conducted two follow-up assessments today to determine if the indoor air quality in the ECF classrooms is appropriate for children. Though there was some improvement, it is the recommendation of TEPA that we remain closed to children for the rest of the week and continue to monitor our building until it is determined that we can safely resume normal services. Thank you to Tribal EPA, K’ima:w Medical Center, Plant Management, and the HVAC technician for continuing to assist us in addressing this issue.

08/18/2026 Update from Angel Korb, ECE Director: Based on the assessment and EPA’s recommendation, I cannot allow children to return to the facility until the HVAC technician completes the corrective work and Tribal EPA conducts a follow-up assessment confirming that indoor conditions are appropriate for children. This decision is necessary to meet my responsibility as Director and to protect the health and safety of the children enrolled in our programs. Therefore, the facility will remain closed to children tomorrow morning, August 19, 2026, while the HVAC system is evaluated and the carbon filters are installed. Once the work is completed and the facility is reassessed, I will review the results and determine when normal services can safely resume. Families and staff will be notified as soon as that determination is made.

Please view our current Hoopa Tribal Head Start 0-5 Program 2026-2027 Program Year Calendar. The calendar has our planned days of operation in yellow, but it is subject to change for emergency closures, like the two days this week, and any other closures authorized by the Hoopa Valley Tribal Council Chairman. 08/17/2026 Update from Angel Korb, ECE Director: Our building continues to be monitored by TEPA to determine if the equipment we have is adequate to make a safe breathing environment for our students. We appreciate our partners at K'ima:w Medical Center, Plant Management, TEPA and our HVAC Technician for their assistance today to help address our air quality issues. The particulate matter levels in the ECF are still exceeding unhealthy levels, and the recommendation of the TEPA staff is to keep the building closed for Children until we can reliably resolve these issues. The ECF will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, August 18, 2026, while we continue to work with the experts available to find a solution. We will continue to update our families as more information comes available.

Important update from Angel Korb, ECE Director: Our building has been monitored this weekend to see if the equipment we have is adequate to make a safe breathing environment for our students. The levels are currently exceeding unhealthy levels, and due to the unhealthy air quality inside the ECF center and the recommendation of TEPA staff, the building will be closed for Children Monday, August 17, 2026. Sorry for the late notice but we were hoping the levels would clear up.
