Back to School season is upon us.

What would you like your child to learn this year?

In Kenpo, we present belts in the shape of an “L.” One of the reasons we do this is to represent our past, present, and future.

When accepting our new rank we reflect on how much time and effort we put in to get where we are. We think about who we are now and what we have achieved. We leave the future open for further growth.

People are often surprised there is more to learn after reaching black belt. I still receive comments about “6 more to go!” as if reaching the highest rank is the goal.

Learning and personal growth don’t just stop once a tangible goal is reached. The real goal is constant improvement. Great martial artists are always refining, improving, and adapting. This extends far beyond the dojo as well.

Take a moment and think about your past self, who you are now, and how you want to improve. What steps did you take today to improve yourself?
