Our next Plenary Speaker is Scott Saft, PhD, who will be presenting on “The “Active” Language Specialist: Research, Teaching, and Language Activism within the Institution” on Sunday, April 7th from 9:00am-10:00am. Scott Saft is a graduate of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He is currently a professor of linguistics in the Ka Haka ʻUla o Keʻelikōlani College of Hawaiian Language at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo where he also serves as the chair of graduate programs. His research focus is on conversation analysis and the linguistic ethnography of language usage in multilingual contexts, and he is also the author of two books: Exploring Multilingual Hawaiʻi: Language Use and Language Ideologies in a Diverse Society from Lexington Press in 2019 and Language and Social Justice in Context from Palgrave MacMillan in 2021. 04/05/2024

Our first Plenary Speaker is Jayson Parba, PhD, who will be presenting on “Learning beyond disciplinary boundaries: Insights from doing collaborative research” on Saturday, April 6th from 12:30pm-1:30pm. Jayson Parba earned his PhD in Second Language Studies at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa in Honolulu, Hawaii and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures at UH Mānoa, where he also serves as the Coordinator of the Filipino Language & Culture Program. His research interests include critical language pedagogy, critical literacy, and multilingualism. In particular, he is interested in critically examining how language use and language education in multilingual contexts can challenge or sustain social inequities, status quo discourses, and linguistic and cultural discrimination. He has published in the International Journal of Multilingualism, Critical Inquiry in Language Studies, Linguistics and Education, Asian Journal of English Language Teaching, and in edited volumes published by Routledge and Palgrave-MacMillan, among others. 04/05/2024
