We also want to introduce to our followers this years Seed Conservation Lab intern Jaclyn Harvey! "I am originally from Colorado and I have a BS in Natural Resource and Environmental Management from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. This summer I hope to develop my plant identification as well as my knowledge regarding the conservation of native plants. I look forward to understanding more about the conventional way to store seeds as they are the key to conserving most native plants. I have been working in the Seed Lab since October and I am excited to continue working towards conserving the rare plants of Hawaiʻi.”

NOW ENROLLING: Study Hawaiian Philosophy with Bruce Ka’imi Watson this Fall:

“This course offers the opportunity to explore manaʻo ʻŌiwi by creating space for the manaʻo to define themselves in their original context through a hosted exploration of ʻŌiwi Hermeneutics and the Aboriginal knowledge system of Hawaiʻi. Fixed firmly in moʻolelo this class prioritizes oral tradition and therefore orality. Moʻolelo is a complex, evolving story with a firm foundation grounded in space/place specific knowledge and experience acquired over generations.

The University of Hawaiʻi recognizes that "As the only provider of public higher education in Hawaiʻi, the university embraces its unique responsibilities to the indigenous people of Hawaiʻi and to Hawaiʻi’s indigenous language and culture. To fulfill this responsibility, the university ensures active support for the participation of Native Hawaiians at the university and support vigorous programs of study and support for the Hawaiian language, history, and culture."

It’s World Oceans Month! Learn more about climate resilient corals via : One of our research assistants got the opportunity to take the QUEST class through UH Mānoa, which focuses on in-situ monitoring of coral reefs using SCUBA. In addition to learning a ton, she was able to snag these close-up photos of corals and related reef species.

Breaking News via : Today Governor Ige is signing a bill into law that declares ʻŌhiʻa as the Hawaiʻi State Endemic Tree!

The ʻŌhiʻa is is endemic to Hawaiʻi, meaning that it is found no where else in the world. It is also the most common endemic tree in Hawaiʻi, and is a pioneer species on new lava flows, meaning it is one of the first plant species to grow on lava rock.

ʻŌhiʻa trees provide important habitat to Hawaiʻi's native forest birds, insects and tree snails. It is also culturally significant, the sturdy wood is used to build houses and canoes, and the flowers are used to make lei and sung about in chant and hula. There are also different moʻolelo (stories) about the ʻŌhiʻa tree.

By signing this bill into law, Hawaiʻi is officially recognizing the cultural and ecological significance of the ʻŌhiʻa tree and raising awareness to the threats that the ʻŌhiʻa is facing, namely Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death (ROD) with the hope that increased awareness will help conserve ʻŌhiʻa forests across the archipelago.
