Pillar 4: Non-Violence

At the Academy of Mindful Movement, we believe in keeping the body safe and healthy. A Mindful Movement instructor always places body safety and well-being above all other priorities while teaching.

Under the pillar of Non-Violence, any movement practice that knowingly, deliberately, or repeatedly compromises the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, or internal organs is not a safe practice, and therefore cannot be considered Mindful Movement.

Mindful Movement invites us to move with awareness, respect, and care for the body we live in. ✨

We send a weekly newsletter every Monday. This week we shared one of the Academy’s concepts: Sensing Your Way into a Move.

In a world that deeply needs wise leaders, one of the most powerful things we can do is become strong self-leaders. The qualities we expect from good leaders, compassion, patience, strength, and clarity, are qualities we can cultivate within ourselves.

It begins with how we guide our own bodies.

At the Academy of Mindful Movement, we call this Sensing Your Way into a Move. Just like testing the water before stepping into a lake, you explore gradually, listening to your body as you move.

Whether you’re lifting a new weight, trying a new yoga pose, learning a dance combination, or pushing your pace, move with awareness. Pay attention to your body’s signals and adjust along the way to stay safe and supported.

The same principle applies to life. A wise self-leader moves forward with awareness, considering the needs of the whole self: body, mind, heart, and spirit.

Imagine walking through warm, wood-framed doors into a welcoming lobby, up a natural wood staircase, and onto a spacious sprung dance floor. You settle into a semi-circle of fellow movement instructors and coaches, and just like that, you’ve found your people.

Last month, we completed our first-ever in-person Academy of Mindful Movement Instructor Level 1 Training at Still & Moving Center in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. Trainees arrived with eagerness and left transformed. From hanging in aerial silk hammocks to observe the body in motion, to witnessing a powerful contrast demo where a “bootcamp-style” instructor reminded everyone why safety and mindfulness matter, every moment was a lesson.

All week, participants from Hawaiʻi and across the continental US practiced, collaborated, and helped each other weave mindfulness into their own movement disciplines. By the final day, the room was buzzing, new skills, new friends, and a much deeper understanding of what mindful movement instruction truly means.

At the Academy of Mindful Movement, we believe movement should feel good—not just in the body, but in the heart.

Joy (with a capital J) is the deep, resonant kind of joy that rises from being fully present, fully alive, and fully yourself in motion. It’s not about performing or achieving. It’s about discovering that spark inside you that lights up when movement becomes play, curiosity, connection, and freedom.

This Joy is more than a happy smile.
It’s the quiet spark that shows up when your breath and body fall into harmony.
It’s the warmth that spreads when a movement suddenly “clicks.”

It’s the ease that fills you when you remember: ah… my body is a place I can enjoy.

✨ Pillar 2: Continuity of Consciousness ✨

At the Academy of Mindful Movement, we believe movement becomes truly transformative when awareness stays with you, moment by moment.

Continuity of Consciousness is the art of intentionally threading elements as you transition:

from one shape to the next,
from stillness to movement,
from effort to ease.
