If you've ever flown an airplane at max gross weight, you've definitely noticed a decrease in climb performance compared to when you're light. Here's why it happens.

Your destination has VFR weather on one half of the runway, and IFR conditions on the other half. Can you legally land? Even if you can, is it a good idea?

Hello everyone, I have closed out our ground school seminar from last night on the FAA website so everyone who attended should have been awarded some WINGS credit. If you did not receive an email let me know.
Just a recap for those who couldn't make it and a couple things I missed. We put together a flight plan going from N30 to KMVY (Martha's Vineyard). We used techniques of pilotage and dead reckoning to plot out our route and calculate our planned groundspeed, wind correction angle, planned fuel burn, trip time, and magnetic heading. One thing I forgot to add in was calculating time to climb. To do this you would need to turn to the back of your aircraft's POH and calculate your climb performance (In feet per minute) for a given day. Then you would use that to figure out how many minutes it will take you to climb to your planned altitude.
We also discussed lost procedures and I mentioned a video about a VFR pilot getting stuck above the clouds and only asking for help at the last minute. I found the video and it is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-EkSaw1Fqw
Keep an eye out for the next ground school email ! Have a great rest of your week everyone!

Hope everyone had a good holiday weekend. Just a quick reminder we will be having ground school this Wednesday 7/7 at 6pm upstairs in the TML Flight School. I will be covering the topic of: VFR Flight Planning. I will go through planning and plotting out a VFR cross country just like you will be asked to do on your Private Pilot Oral exam. Hello everyone!
Just a quick summary of our FIRST in person ground school in over a year ! It felt great to get back together with everyone. We went over the national airspace system, special use airspace, temporary flight restrictions, and VFR cloud clearance requirements. How this is covered on the Private Pilot exam is found in the ACS (Airmen Certification Standards) Page 14 :https://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/acs/media/private_airplane_acs_change_1.pdf
We also went through one of the tricky quizzes that Boldmethod posts on their website. They are a fun challenge for anyone looking to review various topics or anyone preparing for a checkride. https://www.boldmethod.com/
We also watched the LA Speed check video after discussing what type of airspace the SR-71 blackbird used to fly in! For anyone that has not seen it Check it out : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg73GKm7GgI
Next Ground School will be in two weeks! On July 7! I will send out an email with a time and topic later on ! See you soon!
