Dear Parents and Guardians,
We want to bring your attention to our efforts in educating students/guardians of a safety concern involving students who are (either being picked up or walk home) and cross east- across Avenue Q toward 27th South Street.
This area currently does NOT have a designated crosswalk, making it a hazardous location for students to cross.
The danger arises due to vehicles exiting the school parking lot, cars parked alongside the street, and having two lanes of one way traffic during this time.
All these factors limit visibility and increase the risk for students crossing in this area - within the (yellow circle in picture below) Ave Q / 27th South.
Starting this afternoon 10/16/25, McDowell School Resource Officer (SRO), will be on-site to help encourage students to use the designated crosswalks for their safety.

We kindly ask that you speak with your child about the importance of using a designated crosswalk (near the lodge or at the Woolls campus) and discuss which route will be safest for them. While we will continue to monitor and assist students throughout the remainder of the week, we emphasize that parents hold the ultimate responsibility for selecting the safest route for their child once school is released.

October is recognized worldwide as Dyslexia Awareness Month, a time to come together to raise awareness and share resources about Dyslexia. Each week the Dyslexia Department will share information regarding the different challenges and strengths students with dyslexia have as well as resources and videos to help raise awareness and provide suggestions/supports you can implement in your classroom to help your dyslexic students.
