Yesterday in Wild Skills, we got to build our own fishing poles AND catch fish with them!

We made cane poles and then tested out which works better… cane poles vs. modern rods and reels! 🎣

But we learned that the most important fishing skill isn’t the fanciest gear… it’s PATIENCE! 🧘‍♀️🐟 Sometimes you just have to sit, wait, watch, and let the fish come to you.

FIELD TRIP… River School style 😎

Today we loaded up the golf carts and headed out to the Chassahowitzka Salt Marsh Trails for a full day of exploring Wild Florida!

Our students got to experience four local ecosystems up close…. salt marsh, estuary, forest, and treetops while learning about the predators and prey that call each one home. 🦅🐟🦀🌾

Students used their binoculars & field journals to observe & document what they saw as they waded through trails flooded by high tide! A little muddy, a lot of exploring, and exactly the kind of learning we love at River School!

ADVENTURE DAY to Homosassa Springs! 🛶☀️

Our River School crew put in some serious work today… we paddled a total of 3 MILES!💪🏼

We spent the day exploring Homosassa Springs, jumping off rope swings, searching for spring vents, and even had some pretty incredible encounters with manatees near Homosassa Springs State Park. 🩵

Days like today are exactly what Adventure Days are all about… getting our kids out on the water, exploring places they’ve never been, building their confidence, and learning to love & protect Wild Florida through real experiences!

No desks. No walls. Just Wild Florida as our classroom. 🛶

This is what science looks like at River School. 🔬🦀

At River School, our students learn through real experiences out in the wild instead of from a book at a desk! They catch and identify animals living in our waterways, examine specimens under microscopes, dissect fish and owl pellets, explore food webs, kayak through the salt marsh, investigate habitats, and learn how everything in our local ecosystem is connected.

We want our students to know Florida beyond a textbook. To recognize the wildlife in their own backyard. To understand why our springs, rivers, estuaries and wildlife matter. And most importantly, to grow up wanting to protect them. 💚

🦅 We’re working our way to the TOP of the food pyramid!

Today at River School, we learned all about our local birds of prey and the important role these predators play in our Homosassa ecosystem. 🌿

🔎 Dissected owl pellets to discover what owls have been eating
🦴 Identified tiny bones from their prey
🦅 Went on a predator bird scavenger hunt on land & through the salt marsh
👀 Practiced spotting and identifying local birds in the wild

BIRDS SPOTTED: red-shouldered hawk, osprey, turkey vulture, great white egret & a blue heron.

There’s something special about learning about wildlife out in the wild. 💚

Our River School teachers spent the weekend learning at MarineLab | Marine Science in the Florida Keys! ☀️

During MarineLab’s Teacher Workshop, we explored Florida’s seagrass, mangrove, and coral reef ecosystems and learned more about the work being done to protect and restore these important habitats. 🪸🌱

Protecting Wild Florida starts with teaching the next generation to understand it, appreciate it, and care for it. 💙 We’re excited to bring what we learned back to our River School students!

And keep an eye out… a River School field trip to MarineLab may be in our future! 👀🐠🌊
