Here are some photos from today’s Hall of Fame ceremony at Homer Village Hall. New members Dave Cromwell and Kenny Whitt were able to make it, as were representatives for Todd Smith and the late Dan McKenzie.

Mark Sept. 15 from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. down on your calendar as the Homer High School Hall of Fame has a long-awaited induction ceremony for 11 individuals and 13 teams at Homer Village Hall in the Jack Ellis room. Those to be honored include Kirk Webb, Dan McKenzie, Charlie Danner, Mason Petty, Kenny Whitt, Rex Allen, Todd Smith, Dave Cromwell, Coach Jim Trask, Dick Felgenhour, James Morrison and Steve Kasper. Teams to be enshrined include the 1938-39, 1941-42, 1942-43, 1947-48, 1948-49, 1970-71, 1971-72, 1972-73, 1973-74 and 1975-76 basketball teams, along with the 1936 & 1939 kittenball teams and the 1947 softball team.
If you know any of these folks, along with any of the existing Hall of Fame members, please share with them so they can hopefully attend. I realize a good many of them have passed on, but family members to represent them are certainly welcome. The event will be a little more informal than the ceremony we had as part of the HHS Alumni banquet, but that's OK, we still want to honor HHS's greatest athletes.

Another member of the 2024 HHS Hall of Fame Class is Jim Trask, former boys basketball coach from the 1970s. He is just the third coach selected for induction!

The Hall of Fame has been in limbo since Covid hit in early 2020. Now, the committee has decided to move forward with an induction ceremony, which will honor not only those who should have been inducted in 2020, but a new class of honorees selected at our meeting last week. This 2024 Class in comprised of Kirk Webb, Dan McKenzie, Charlie Danner and Mason Petty from pre-1970, along with Kenny Whitt, Rex Allen, Todd Smith and Dave Cromwell from 1970–1988. The Class of 2020 honorees can be found just a couple posts previous. Congrats to our soon-to-be Hall-of-Famers, and details on a reception/induction ceremony for early 2024 will be released as soon as they are finalized. The plan is to bring back The Hall of Fame with a bang, with all living Hall of Famers asked to return for this event, where we can revisit those already inducted and honor the newest members!

Information About 2022 Annual Alumni Banquet & Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Hello Alumni:

As you might have surmised, those instrumental in planning/hosting the Banquet and HOF Ceremony have decided to suspend our annual festivities for the third year in a row, but THANKFULLY and FINALLY not because of a pandemic!

We have decided that it is impossible to move forward with our banquet without establishing a “standing” Homer High School Alumni Association Committee to be part of the decision-making, planning, implementing, and hosting of our annual event. We have a very small group of the same several alumni who, every year, offer to “help” with certain tasks (THANK YOU, you know who you are!), but there are lots more responsibilities that go into pulling the banquet off. In addition to just hosting the banquet each year, it would be nice to have a committee to determine if the Alumni Association could possibly be more involved in other Homer school or community activities or events.

In addition to the news above, the Hall of Fame Committee has very graciously agreed to add the Alumni Association to the title of their page. Moving forward, any information posted about or by the committee regarding the banquet (or anything else) will be posted to that page rather than this “Homer, IL Happenings Then and Now” page. So, if you haven’t already done so, please go to the Hall of Fame page (link below) and click “Like” to be added (I will also add this same post to the HOF/Alumni Association page for comments to be added there).

Please consider serving on our Homer High School Alumni Association Committee by commenting on this post or sending an email to [email protected]. Initial thinking is that we possibly need 4-5 volunteers for the possible offices of President, Vice President, Secretary and/or Treasurer, and Community Outreach – but that is also a decision that a committee will need to decide. 😉

Thank you all for your patience as we figure this out. We value your opinions and hope that all HHS Alumni agree that this is the direction we need to take to ensure our HHS Association/Banquet/HOF doesn’t come to a halt. The past two years have been difficult for everyone. I know of a few very special alumni that we have lost and I’m sure there are even more I’m not aware of. Let’s don’t let another year go by without seeing each other again!

Due to Covid-19, the HHS Alumni Banquet will not be held this year, and the Hall of Fame Committee has made the decision to hold over our 2020 honorees and induct them at the 2022 Alumni Banquet. We feel it is best not to water down this group's inclusion by having another election, so we will not vote on another class until this class has been installed. Thank you for your patience.

Sadly, with the Covid-19 outbreak, the HHS Alumni Banquet is being canceled this year, so our 2020 Hall of Fame honorees who we recently announced will now be the 2021 Class and will be honored as part of the 2021 Banquet.

The HHS Hall of Fame Committee had its annual election meeting today and is proud to announce the 2020 Class. It consists of Dick Felgenhour, Class of 1962; James Morrison, Class of 1942; Steven Kasper, Class of 1976; The 1970-71, 1971-72, 1973-74 and 1975-76 basketball teams; the 1938-39, 1941-42 and 1942-43 basketball teams and the 1936, 1939 and 1947 softball teams. It should also be noted that L. Carl "Sammy" Goad, Class of 1943, has been chosen for induction for community service.
