May 15, 2026 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aurora Police Investigating Long-Term Child Sexual Abuse Allegations

The Aurora Police Department is investigating allegations involving the long-term sexual abuse of minors by Michael Robert Herbert, 55, of Aurora, who is on the school board of Aurora Christian Schools.

In December 2025, a man in his 20s reported to the Aurora Police Department that he had been the victim of child sexual abuse beginning when he was an early teenager. During the investigation, detectives learned Herbert allegedly used a trusted relationship to groom and abuse the victim over several years within the Aurora community and other jurisdictions, allegedly providing gifts, money, and other incentives as part of the ongoing manipulation and abuse.

As the investigation progressed, Aurora Police detectives developed information indicating Herbert may have had similar interactions with other juvenile male victims based on evidence gathered during the investigation and reports made to law enforcement agencies.

On May 14, 2026, Herbert was charged following review by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office with:

• Involuntary Sexual Servitude of a Minor Under 17, Class X Felony
• Criminal Sexual Assault – Supervisory Role Victim Over 13 Years Old and Under 17 Years Old (4 counts), Class 1 Felony
• Involuntary Sexual Servitude of a Minor Age 17–18, Class 1 Felony
• Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse – Defendant More Than 5 Years Older (3 counts), Class 2 Felony
• Child Sexual Abuse Material – Possession of Depiction by Computer, Class 3 Felony

Herbert was transported to the Kane County Adult Justice Center for a detention hearing on May 15, 2026.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing electronic evidence, conducting follow-up interviews, and coordinating with prosecutors regarding possible additional charges.

Due to the multi-jurisdictional nature and scope of the investigation, the Aurora Police Department worked in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) throughout the case.

Anyone with information related to this investigation, or who believes they may have had contact with Herbert under similar circumstances, is encouraged to contact the Aurora Police Department Investigations Division at (630) 256-5500 or email [email protected].

Charges are not proof of guilt. All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A former Ogden, Utah police officer, Colten Scott Johansen, was sentenced to just 30 days in jail by Judge Catherine Conklin and given suspended prison terms after pleading guilty to three felony counts involving s*xual misconduct with minors, including forcible s*xual ab*se and CSAM charges. Conklin initially sentenced him to 15 years, but suspended all but 30 days saying he’s not a “danger to the community in any respect.” Judge Conklin was appointed by Republican Governor Spencer Cox.
