School board work is quiet, steady, and often unseen, but it shapes every part of what our students experience. Our board members give their time, their energy, and their judgment to help our district move forward in a way that reflects our values and our community.

As we begin this new term, we want to express our appreciation for Terry Lierz, whose four years of service on the USD 336 Board of Education have come to a close. Terry approached the role with a thoughtful mindset and a genuine commitment to doing what’s best for students. His work helped guide the district through important decisions, always with a focus on stability, safety, and strong opportunities for kids.

We are grateful for the consistent support, long evenings, and careful consideration Terry contributed throughout his term. Public service at this level requires patience, collaboration, and a willingness to wrestle with complex issues. Terry brought those qualities to the table every time.

To all our board members, thank you for your continued dedication. Your leadership ensures our schools remain a place where students feel supported, staff feel valued, and learning stays at the center of our work.

This summer has been fast and furious! We have been operating a little lean on staffing in the district office this month while we continue our search for a new District Secretary.

Because the Board of Education believes in the mission and vision of USD 336, they have been chipping in to volunteer and support with coordinating meals for staff trainings and even answering phones when their schedules allow.

Collective Efficacy, as defined by renowned researcher Albert Bandura (1997, p.477), is “a group's shared belief in its conjoint capability to organize and execute the courses of action required to produce given levels of attainment.”

Or as we say around here, “We are Holton!”

RE: Change in Board Meeting Structure
-----------

Welcome to the 2024-25 school year!

This year, we move into a new chapter. We prepare for a new school year with new leadership and a new Strategic Plan. As we met with the community to hear feedback on the direction in which we would next like to see USD 336 progress, the most resounding feedback was the need for connection and communication.

This summer, our leadership teams have been working with a renowned educational consultant versed in communication research. Since so much of our interactions are nuanced, the most effective communication happens in person. On average, 80% of communication is nonverbal, including tone, expressions, gestures, and posture. While it was a necessary adjustment during the pandemic, Zoom has greatly hindered our ability to engage in effective two-way dialogue with the public.

Therefore, with guidance from the Kansas Association of School Boards, we invite everyone to join us for the board meetings going forward at the District Office (515 Pennsylvania Ave) so that we may reconnect with you. We will no longer be streaming the board meetings online.

For those who are unable to attend, we are working to create structures that allow for a timely review of the board meeting documents and information. Currently, the board is discussing a potential change to the website to include a page for monthly uploads of the Board Agenda, Board Minutes, and Board Packet of documents including current financial information. We hope this access to information helps to keep the community better informed of the purpose behind the decisions made at the board table.

We look forward to continued partnership with each of you. A continuous feedback loop is essential as we seek to consider all perspectives when making decisions that impact the district and the community. We hope to personally connect with you soon.

With great appreciation,
-Holton USD 336 Board of Education

Holton USD #336 Operational Guidelines for this school year.

We know this will not answer every question but it will help show what we know as we move forward to start the school year.

Also, just a reminder, the middle school and high school will have their open house tonight (Tuesday) from 6 to 7:30 and then a Fall sports parent meeting 7:30 tonight. The Elementary School (PreK-5th grade) will have a "Stuff your Locker Night" tomorrow (Wednesday) from 6 to 7.

Hopefully everyone has completed enrollment as we are so excited to see all students on Thursday!

The Holton USD 336 Food Service Director and his staff are proud to offer the USDA Summer Food Service Program to our community. This program provides an opportunity to continue a child’s physical and social development while providing nutritious meals during vacation periods from school. Your support of this program helps children return to school ready to learn.

Meals will be available the day after school lets out for the summer on Wednesday, May 26 which just happens to be tomorrow. Our food service team plans to continue this program all summer long as long as we are serving the needs for our community and we have enough participation to keep our staff busy and financially afloat. We will re-evaluate the programs effectiveness and participation before July 6th and possibly again before July 30th. We will not be open or have food pickups on Memorial Day (next Monday, May 31) and Monday, July 5.

Meals are available for curbside pick-up at the Holton Elementary School weekdays from 12:00 to 1:00 pm each weekday and we had such success last year in the Denison community, we are going to deliver meals and have pick-up available at the Denison Community Center from 11:30 to 12:30 each weekday. A breakfast and lunch will be available daily and multiple meals on Fridays to provide adequate food for the weekend. This program is available to all children 18 years and younger. Please have children in the car or with you at the time of pickup.
