Today, we celebrate a moment that fills us with hope. We received wonderful news from Tom Shotzbarger at the Graver Arboretum: “We have our first American Chestnut fruit! The ‘Antinanco’ tree is about 12 feet tall with an 8-foot spread.”

After years of planting and believing in the restoration of one of America’s most iconic native trees, seeing the very first chestnut burr appear on an Antinanco tree is far more than a milestone. It is a symbol of resilience, patience, and the power of people working together for future generations.

Our deepest gratitude goes to Tom Shotzbarger for his dedicated care and stewardship, and to Joseph Resch, the visionary and driving force behind Antinanco’s American Chestnut restoration program, whose passion and knowledge have guided this effort from the beginning.

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to every planting site and groundskeeper who has welcomed these trees onto the land and who care for them through every season; to our volunteers who have planted, watered, protected, and monitored them; and to our friends, supporters, and donors whose encouragement makes this work possible.

Today we join many others in remembering Joycelyn Midose with gratitude.

Joycelyn was an early supporter of Antinanco and a kind soul who believed deeply in our vision - honoring the spirit of children, plants, animals, and all sentient beings on earth, fostering a higher consciousness, and reconnecting with the wisdom of nature. Her encouragement and quiet faith in our mission meant more than she probably realized.

Some people leave their mark not by seeking recognition, but by uplifting others and helping good ideas take root. Joycelyn was one of those people.

May her spirit continue its journey in light and peace, and may all who loved her find comfort in the beautiful legacy of compassion, wisdom, and love that she leaves behind.
