50 years ago today, was born! DJ Kool Herc is credited as the father of hip-hop, after he debuted his new experimental DJ style during a party hosted in the Bronx in 1973.
During this party, Kool Herc first began to isolate the instrumental portion of the record which emphasized the drum beat—the "break"—and switch from one break to another, called the "merry-go-around." This breakbeat DJing, using funky drum solos, formed the basis of hip hop music. ✨
