“Aishet Chayelet” by Leah Luria

So excited to offer this piece as a glossy acrylic print! May she bring gevura and emuna (strength and faith) to all the homes she graces!

Upon stumbling upon this image shared on social media, I found myself profoundly moved as an artist, a woman, a jew. I felt compelled to translate its intricate layers into a visual narrative. The juxtaposition of a woman dressed in exquisite fashion, deep in prayer at the Western Wall, M16 military machine gun slung across her shoulder, stirred something within me.

In the midst of a wartime struggle none of us ever dreamed we’d see in our lifetimes - a war against the forces of pure evil, the flurry of fervent prayers for the release of captives constantly flowing up from our lips to the heavens, I sensed in this image a poignant fusion of femininity, faith, and our strength as a people.

As I embarked on translating this powerful moment into art (a total of 17 hours of digital painting and 15,871 keystrokes) I felt the urgency to convey the essence of female empowerment and our role in the upcoming geulah (yaalah, Hashem!). It is my hope that in this painting I am able to encapsulate a fragment of the complex beauty of modern Jewish identity at this moment in our history. May this artwork in some way serve as a reminder to us to continue to draw from the deep well of strength and emunah of our ancestors (especially our Imahot).

Really enjoying playing around with coffee as paint! Observations from the field 😉: I find that a single dip of the brush into the concentrated coffee “ink” seems to stays on the brush for a crazy long time and doesn’t need to be redipped for much longer than I’m used to with watercolor or other media. This lends to beautiful, extended fluid lines and strokes, more variation in the line thickness as well. I highly suggest playing around with some coffee “paint” today!!

Happy Mothers Day! These trophy paintings are a student work throwback from my after school group art classes that I used to teach around my kitchen table in Hollywood, Florida! I wholeheartedly believe that moms deserve a trophy for everything they do!

Is your morning cup of coffee a ritual for you? Did you know, coffee is not just for drinking? While coffee helps adults wake up, you can actually give your kids coffee too - to PAINT with! It’s such a fun way to encourage creativity and exploration without fancy art supplies!

Here’s the set up:
• Mix approx 1 tsp of instant coffee and 1 tsp or 2 of water.
• Work in layers, or make a few cups with different concentrations of coffee so you have some light, medium and dark values.
• Have the kids play around with mark-making while they’re at it - try coffee painting using a brush, twigs, spoon or even a fork and create cool parallel lines.

Now you have my encouragement to go give your kids some coffee - and try this aromatic medium out yourself!

What to you paint when you don’t know what to paint? For my son it’s always birds!

Sharpie+washable markers are my favorite “magical” mixed media combination for non messy art projects! Brush on some clean water over the markers and watch the unpredictable watercolor effects swirl and whirl while your black outlines stay put! Colors next to each in similar hues always look beautiful with this technique.
