accommodations always have to be available and easily accessible but depending on the accommodation, not necessarily front loaded, or forced on the student under every circumstance.
As an example, if a student is doing well on an assignment and does not need extended time on a given day, they can turn in their assignment whenever they are finished…. As opposed to requiring a student to take extra time or continue in a small group after they have already finished, check their work and conveyed they are done. Some accommodations are needed at certain times, and others are not needed at another time and then some are always/constantly needed.
For some students the need for extra time will matter more on the complexity of the questions versus the length of the assignment and for some , the opposite . If you tell me what the accommodation is that she’s having to ask for and under what context, I can help guide you further. Another example to illustrate the opposite, a student should not have to ask for a copy of the teachers PowerPoint when they’re entitled to a copy of notes every day because they are unable to write at the speed of the lecture. just as, a student of a non-reader that is expected to comprehend grade level of text, would always have to be front loaded an audio version.

As the school year begins, many parents across the country are preparing for Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings. For some, this is a routine part of the school calendar. For others—especially if a child is newly identified or has had challenges with school support in the past—these meetings can bring up stress and uncertainty. The good news is this: your relationship with your child’s IEP team is one of the most important tools you have to ensure your child receives the services and supports they are entitled to under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)....

really sad and the conflict that many professionals in the school system experience
Last spring’s school assignment was a sea change for Gail Vanderbeek, a veteran Baltimore County Public Schools speech-language pathologist. Instead of being responsible for one school’s speech difficulties and communication skills, she would now have an additional school to serve.
That meant more paperwork, meetings, and — critically — additional students, some of whom require one-on-one instruction. Vanderbeek worries that, as a result, some of these children are falling through the cracks.
Speech-language pathologists work with students who have a range of communication issues, which can include speech, voice, language and cognition impairments. These students require individualized instruction to meet their academic needs. And, as Baltimore County Public Schools’ SLPs feel the squeeze of greater demands, the district risks losing providers and students to the private sector. Read more: https://bit.ly/43RXXE1

Post IEP meeting energy boost. It hits different when it’s your own child you need to advocate for. 😌
Yes, it’s been awhile since you heard from me. I’ve been in meetings everyday since august … and today for my own son. Just know that i know your struggle, the gaslighting and the frustration. In the end of the day, we keep doing what’s best for our children and never give up. We’ll get through this 🙂
- 75 iep meetings as a teacher
- 6500 meetings as an advocate
- 4 iep meetings for my son
Still smiling though!!

Words matter tremendously… our words can inflate or deflate… for those that are walking this earth consciously, watch how you phrase “issues, struggles, problems, challenges” because little ears are listening.
