Throughout her years as a first grade teacher, Michelle had a gift teaching reading to struggling readers. Number one, she knew how they felt because she had been there. Number two, she knew their coping mechanisms because she had used the same things to attempt to not look “stupid” in front of her peers years earlier. Besides these two things, what was different? Michelle went “Back 2 Basics” and focused on the patterns of words. She taught HOW to decode the words, whether it was a 4 letter word or multisyllabic word. All words can be broken down into pieces, patterns and phonics skills BUT you have to know the phonics skills. You have to master them, you have to spend hours practicing them. You can’t skip this stage. We continue to push reading comprehension and not decoding. So Michelle is taking everyone “Back 2 Basics” with phonics and decoding.

Back 2 Basics started as Back 2 Basics Childcare. Michelle was pregnant with her second child and teaching first grade when she decided to open a licensed in-home Family Child Care Home. She had seen what was in the area when her first born was little and knew there had to be a better way. Daycares were like babysitting and childcare centers were all academic based but not developmentally appropriate. Michelle went Back 2 Basics: she took the learning from the center and the love from the daycare and created an amazing developmentally appropriate learning environment for children.

After the childcare closed, Michelle went back to teaching beginning reading and realized she had the same approach. Bring things back to basics and the children will learn! Bring them down to their level, build their confidence, teach them the skills and give them time to practice to mastery.

She approaches her coaching the same way. Looking at the big picture, bringing things back 2 basics, planning and building processes and routines for everything. Forget all the “fluff” and let's master the basics before building more into the structure.
