ESY = Extended School Year
Not to be confused with summer school or other credit recovery options.
Must have an IEP that makes the student eligible for ESY through the ESY section that asks if the student meets ESY eligibility criteria, how and what goals will be serviced in the summer.
Like every other requirement of IDEA, ESY determinations must be individualized.
Sadly, this year more than past (this says a lot), ESY is being also sticked together in many districts and assignments of days/times collective offerings made vs individualized considerations.
Keep in mind that the details matter in ESY. What questions do you ask about this years provision of ESY and anticipated groupings (size, level/range of student needs and variety of needs of group, I how are students being grouped? Every ESY class is an ESE class. There is no exposure to nondisabled peers in ESY.
Ask me any ESY, summer school, summer camp and other ESE related summer questions… I’m here to help and I’ll make sure to answer in the comments or through coming on live!!
Have a good day 😊and summer 🌞

Most parents and professional advocates are aware that the acronym, IEP stands for Individualized Educational Plan and that a free appropriate public education (FAPE) is owed to ALL STUDENTS. Krista Barth, our founder, has created a series that takes viewers through all of the most important concepts and ideas that you must be aware of if you plan to be an effective advocate for a student. This series is cleverly done by expanding on all the words starting with 'I' 'E' and 'P' that have both impact and relevancy to your advocacy journey. These quick and engaging courses provide you with the foundations that you need to make a difference on behalf of your child, any child and the greater system as a whole.
