In 1973, Hollywood Hills High School became the first Broward County school to win a state football championship. Back when the Miami Dolphins were winning Super Bowls, the Hollywood Hills Spartans were dominating South Florida high school football. Led by head coach Dick Saltrick, the Spartans used a wishbone offense modeled after Barry Switzer's Oklahoma teams to run wild over their opponents. Photo courtesy of Steve Rochelle.
Hollywood Hills put Broward County football on the map. One year earlier in 1972, the Spartans crushed an Elvis Peacock-led Miami Central team in the playoffs at the Orange Bowl. It was the first time a Broward school had beaten a Miami-Dade County team in the postseason. The Spartans didn't have any big name players, instead relying on superior fundamentals and cohesive team play. But the team wasn't lacking in great talent. Quarterback John Kurowski was a master at executing the triple option and went on to play for the United States Naval Academy. Receiver Gerald Bain went on to play at Oklahoma State.
It would take 13 years for a Broward County team to win another state title. (Dillard High in 1986). Prior to the early 70s, Broward County football was considered the inferior little brother to their neighbors to the south. Since then, several Broward schools, such as Dillard, Ely and St. Thomas Aquinas have won state championships, producing some of the best players in Florida.
Heads-up friends ๐๐ผ there is a profile selling Spartan shirts and hoodies and NOT affiliated with any fundraisers. This is a new way to sell t-shirts - infiltrate Alumni groups and use the mascot. Report to the Admin if you see this happening.
๐ฃ There are shirts for sale that go toward HHHS fundraisers. Be careful with any profile posting links from For-profit sites.

Hollywood Hills High School coach Dick Saltrick is carried off the field after the Spartans defeated Jacksonville's Raines High School 22-9 in the 1973 Class 4A state championship game at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. Hollywood Hills became the first Broward County school to win a state football championship. For years, Broward County football was considered the weaker little brother to their southern neighbors in Dade County. But Saltrick's Hollywood Hills teams would change that reputation. One year earlier, Hollywood Hills defeated Miami Central 31-7 at the Orange Bowl to become the first Broward school to beat a Dade school in the state playoffs. From 1972 to 1974 the Hollywood Hills Spartans racked up a 38-1 record in the regular season.
Earlier this week, the FHSAA announced Fort Lauderdale will host this year's Class 4A to Class 8A state championship games at DRV PNK Stadium (pronounced Drive Pink)--formerly the site of Lockhart Stadium which was demolished 2 years ago. It is the first time Fort Lauderdale has hosted a state championship game since 1973.
